Jeremías 36

1 Baruc lee los mensajes del Señor
El Señor
le dio a Jeremías el siguiente mensaje en el cuarto año del reinado de Joacim, hijo de Josías, en Judá:

2 «Toma un rollo y anota todos mis mensajes contra Israel, Judá y las demás naciones. Comienza con el primer mensaje allá por los tiempos de Josías y escribe todos los mensajes, hasta llegar al tiempo presente.

3 Quizá los habitantes de Judá se arrepientan cuando vuelvan a escuchar todas las cosas terribles que tengo pensadas para ellos. Entonces perdonaré sus pecados y maldades».

4 Así que Jeremías mandó llamar a Baruc, hijo de Nerías, y mientras Jeremías le dictaba todas las profecías que el Señor
le había dado, Baruc las escribía en un rollo.

5 Entonces Jeremías le dijo a Baruc: «Estoy preso aquí y no puedo ir al templo.

6 Así que en el próximo día de ayuno ve al templo y lee los mensajes de parte del Señor
que te he hecho escribir en este rollo. Léelos para que la gente de todo Judá que esté presente los escuche.

7 Quizá se aparten de sus malos caminos y antes de que sea demasiado tarde le pidan al Señor
que los perdone. Pues el Señor
los ha amenazado con su terrible enojo».

8 Baruc hizo lo que Jeremías le dijo y leyó al pueblo los mensajes del Señor
en el templo.

9 Lo hizo en un día de ayuno sagrado, celebrado a finales del otoño,
durante el quinto año del reinado de Joacim, hijo de Josías. Gente de toda Judá había venido a Jerusalén ese día para asistir a los servicios en el templo.

10 Baruc leyó al pueblo las palabras de Jeremías, escritas en el rollo. En el templo, se paró frente a la habitación de Gemarías, hijo de Safán, el secretario. Esa habitación estaba junto al atrio superior del templo, cerca de la entrada de la puerta Nueva.

11 Cuando Micaías, hijo de Gemarías y nieto de Safán, oyó los mensajes de parte del Señor
,

12 bajó a la sala del secretario en el palacio, donde estaban reunidos los funcionarios administrativos. Allí estaba el secretario Elisama junto con Delaía, hijo de Semaías; Elnatán, hijo de Acbor; Gemarías, hijo de Safán; Sedequías, hijo de Ananías y todos los demás funcionarios.

13 Cuando Micaías les contó acerca de los mensajes que Baruc leía al pueblo,

14 los funcionarios enviaron a Jehudí, hijo de Netanías, nieto de Selemías y bisnieto de Cusi, para pedirle a Baruc que también viniera a leerles los mensajes. Entonces Baruc tomó el rollo y se dirigió a ellos.

15 Los funcionarios le dijeron: «Siéntate y léenos el rollo». Entonces Baruc hizo lo que le pidieron.

16 Cuando oyeron todos los mensajes, se miraron unos a otros asustados.
—Tenemos que contarle al rey lo que hemos oído —le dijeron a Baruc—,

17 pero primero dinos cómo obtuviste estos mensajes. ¿Provinieron directamente de Jeremías?

18 Así que Baruc explicó:
—Jeremías me los dictó y yo los escribí con tinta, palabra por palabra, en este rollo.

19 —Tanto tú como Jeremías deberían esconderse —le dijeron los funcionarios a Baruc—. ¡No le digan a nadie dónde están!

20 Entonces, los funcionarios dejaron el rollo a salvo en la habitación de Elisama, el secretario, y le fueron a decir al rey lo que había acontecido.

21 El rey Joacim quema el rollo
Luego el rey envió a Jehudí a buscar el rollo y Jehudí lo sacó de la habitación de Elisama y lo leyó al rey, con los funcionarios presentes.

22 Era avanzado el otoño, así que el rey estaba en el cuarto del palacio acondicionado para el invierno, sentado junto a un brasero para calentarse.

23 Cada vez que Jehudí terminaba de leer tres o cuatro columnas, el rey tomaba un cuchillo y cortaba esa sección del rollo. Luego lo lanzaba al fuego, sección por sección, hasta que quemó todo el rollo.

24 Ni el rey ni sus asistentes mostraron ninguna señal de temor o arrepentimiento ante lo que habían oído.

25 Aun cuando Elnatán, Delaía y Gemarías le suplicaron al rey que no quemara el rollo, él no les hizo caso.

26 Entonces el rey mandó a su hijo Jerameel, a Seraías, hijo de Azriel, y a Selemías, hijo de Abdeel, para que arrestaran a Baruc y a Jeremías; pero el Señor
los había escondido.

27 Jeremías vuelve a escribir el rollo
Después de que el rey quemó el rollo en el que Baruc había escrito las palabras de Jeremías, el Señor
le dio a Jeremías otro mensaje. Le dijo:

28 «Toma otro rollo y escribe de nuevo todo tal como lo hiciste en el rollo que quemó el rey Joacim.

29 Luego dile al rey: “Esto dice el Señor
: ‘Tú quemaste el rollo porque allí dice que el rey de Babilonia destruiría esta tierra y la dejaría vacía de gente y de animales.

30 Ahora, esto dice el Señor
acerca del rey Joacim de Judá: el rey no tendrá herederos que se sienten en el trono de David. Su cadáver será echado a la intemperie y permanecerá sin enterrar, expuesto al calor del día y a las heladas de la noche.

31 Lo castigaré a él, a su familia y a sus ayudantes por sus pecados. Derramaré sobre ellos y sobre la gente de Jerusalén y de Judá todas las calamidades que prometí, porque no hicieron caso a mis advertencias’”».

32 Así que Jeremías tomó otro rollo y volvió a dictarle a su secretario Baruc. Escribió todo lo que estaba en el rollo que el rey Joacim había quemado en el brasero. ¡Solo que esta vez agregó mucho más!

Jeremías 36 Commentary

Chapter 36

Baruch is to write the prophecies of Jeremiah. (1-8) The princes advise them to hide themselves. (9-19) The king having heard a part, burns the roll. (20-32)

Verses 1-8 The writing of the Scriptures was by Divine appointment. The Divine wisdom directed to this as a proper means; if it failed, the house of Judah would be the more without excuse. The Lord declares to sinners the evil he purposes to do against them, that they may hear, and fear, and return from their evil ways; and whenever any one makes this use of God's warnings, in dependence on his promised mercy, he will find the Lord ready to forgive his sins. All others will be left without excuse; and the consideration that great is the anger God has pronounced against us for sin, should quicken both our prayers and our endeavours.

Verses 9-19 Shows of piety and devotion may be found even among those, who, though they keep up forms of godliness, are strangers and enemies to the power of it. The princes patiently attended the reading of the whole book. They were in great fear. But even those who are convinced to the truth and importance of what they hear, and are disposed to favour those who preach it, often have difficulties and reserves about their safety, interest, or preferment, so that they do not act according to their convictions, and try to get rid of what they find troublesome.

Verses 20-32 Those who despise the word of God, will soon show, as this king did, that they hate it; and, like him, they would wish it destroyed. See what enmity there is against God in the carnal mind, and wonder at his patience. The princes showed some concern, till they saw how light the king made of it. Beware of making light of God's word!

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 36

This chapter gives an account of an impious action of King Jehoiakim's burning the roll of Jeremiah's prophecies read unto him, and the consequence of it. The order to write this roll, the time when, the contents and use of it, are in Jer 36:1-3; the writing of it by Baruch, the order of the prophet to read it to the people on such a day, with the view he had in so doing, Jer 36:4-7; the reading of it by Baruch to the people first, Jer 36:8-10; then to the princes, being sent for by them, upon a report made to them, Jer 36:11-15; the king being acquainted with it, Jehudi was sent to fetch the roll, who read it to the king, Jer 36:16-21; who having heard part of it, burnt it, notwithstanding the intercession of some of his princes to the contrary, Jer 36:22-25; and who also ordered the apprehension of Jeremiah and Baruch, who could not be found, Jer 36:26; upon this a new roll is ordered to be written, Jer 36:27,28; which was done with some additions to it, respecting the destruction of the land, and the people in it, by the Chaldeans; and particularly the death of the king, and his want of burial, Jer 36:29-32.
