Josué 11

1 Israel derrota a los ejércitos del norte
Cuando el rey Jabín, de Hazor, oyó lo que había sucedido, envió un mensaje a los siguientes reyes: al rey Jobab, de Madón; al rey de Simrón; al rey de Acsaf;

2 a todos los reyes de la zona montañosa del norte; a los reyes del valle del Jordán, al sur de Galilea;
a los reyes de las colinas de Galilea;
a los reyes de Nafot-dor, al occidente;

3 a los reyes de Canaán, tanto del oriente como del occidente; y a los reyes de los amorreos, de los hititas, de los ferezeos, de los jebuseos en la zona montañosa y de los heveos en las ciudades que están en las laderas del monte Hermón, en la tierra de Mizpa.

4 Todos esos reyes salieron a pelear. Sus ejércitos unidos formaban una inmensa multitud. Y con todos sus caballos y carros de guerra cubrieron el terreno como la arena a la orilla del mar.

5 Los reyes unieron sus fuerzas y establecieron su campamento alrededor de las aguas que están cerca de Merom para pelear contra Israel.

6 Entonces el Señor
le dijo a Josué: «No les tengas miedo. Mañana, a esta hora, los entregaré a todos muertos en manos de Israel. Después lisia sus caballos y quema sus carros de guerra».

7 Así que Josué y todos sus hombres de guerra avanzaron hasta las aguas que están cerca de Merom y atacaron por sorpresa.

8 Y el Señor
les dio la victoria sobre sus enemigos. Los israelitas los persiguieron tan lejos como Gran Sidón y Misrefot-maim y, hacia el oriente, por el valle de Mizpa, hasta que no quedó ningún guerrero del enemigo con vida.

9 Después Josué lisió los caballos y quemó todos los carros de guerra, tal como el Señor
había indicado.

10 Luego Josué regresó y tomó Hazor y mató a su rey. (Hazor había sido por un tiempo la capital de todos esos reinos).

11 Los israelitas destruyeron por completo
a todo ser viviente de la ciudad, sin dejar sobrevivientes. No se le perdonó la vida a nadie. Y después Josué quemó la ciudad.

12 Josué masacró a todos los demás reyes y a sus pueblos, los destruyó por completo, tal como lo había ordenado Moisés, siervo del Señor
.

13 Pero los israelitas no quemaron ninguna de las ciudades construidas sobre collados salvo Hazor, la cual Josué quemó.

14 Y los israelitas se quedaron con todo el botín y con los animales de las ciudades devastadas; pero mataron a toda la gente, sin dejar a nadie con vida.

15 Tal como el Señor
le había ordenado a su siervo Moisés, también Moisés le ordenó a Josué. Y Josué hizo lo que se le indicó, obedeció cuidadosamente todos los mandatos que el Señor
le había dado a Moisés.

16 Así que Josué conquistó toda la región: la zona montañosa, todo el Neguev, toda el área que rodea la ciudad de Gosén, las colinas occidentales, el valle del Jordán,
los montes de Israel y las colinas de Galilea.

17 El territorio israelita ahora se extendía desde el monte Halac, que se eleva hacia Seir, al sur, hasta Baal-gad, al pie del monte Hermón, en el valle del Líbano, al norte. Josué mató a todos los reyes de esos territorios,

18 después de hacer guerra por mucho tiempo para lograrlo.

19 Ninguno de esa región hizo la paz con los israelitas salvo los heveos de Gabaón. Todos los demás fueron derrotados,

20 porque el Señor
les endureció el corazón y los hizo pelear contra los israelitas. Así que fueron totalmente destruidos sin compasión, tal como el Señor
le había ordenado a Moisés.

21 Durante ese período, Josué destruyó a todos los descendientes de Anac, quienes vivían en la zona montañosa de Hebrón, Debir, Anab y en toda la región montañosa de Judá e Israel. Los mató a todos y destruyó sus ciudades por completo.

22 No quedó ningún descendiente de Anac en la tierra de Israel, aunque algunos todavía permanecían en Gaza, Gat y Asdod.

23 Así que Josué tomó control de todo el territorio, tal como el Señor
le había indicado a Moisés. Le dio la tierra al pueblo de Israel como su preciada posesión y repartió el territorio entre las tribus. Entonces por fin la tierra descansó de la guerra.

Chapter 11

Divers kings overcome at the waters of Merom. (1-9) Hazor is taken and burned. (10-14) All that country subdued, The Anakims cut off. (15-23)

Verses 1-9 The wonders God wrought for the Israelites were to encourage them to act vigorously themselves. Thus the war against Satan's kingdom, carried on by preaching the gospel, was at first forwarded by miracles; but being fully proved to be of God, we are now left to the Divine grace in the usual course, in the use of the sword of the Spirit. God encouraged Joshua. Fresh dangers and difficulties make it necessary to seek fresh supports from the word of God, which we have nigh unto us for use in every time of need. God proportions our trials to our strength, and our strength to our trials. Joshua's obedience in destroying the horses and chariots, shows his self-denial in compliance with God's command. The possession of things on which the carnal heart is prone to depend, is hurtful to the life of faith, and the walk with God; therefore it is better to be without worldly advantages, than to have the soul endangered by them.

Verses 10-14 The Canaanites filled up the measure of their iniquity, and were, as a judgment, left to the pride, obstinacy, and enmity of their hearts, and to the power of Satan; all restraints being withdrawn, while the dispensations of Providence tended to drive them to despair. They brought on themselves the vengeance they justly merited, of which the Israelites were to be executioners, by the command the Lord gave to Moses.

Verses 15-23 Never let the sons of Anak be a terror to the Israel of God, for their day to fall will come. The land rested from war. It ended not in a peace with the Canaanites, that was forbidden, but in a peace from them. There is a rest, a rest from war, remaining for the people of God, into which they shall enter, when their warfare is accomplished. That which was now done, is compared with what had been said to Moses. God's word and his works, if viewed together, will be found mutually to set each other forth. If we make conscience of our duty, we need not question the performance of the promise. But the believer must never put off his armour, or expect lasting peace, till he closes his eyes in death; nay, as his strength and usefulness increase, he may expect more heavy trials; yet the Lord will not permit any enemies to assault the believer till he has prepared him for the battle. Christ Jesus ever lives to plead for his people, and their faith shall not fail, however Satan may be permitted to assault them. And however tedious, sharp, and difficult the believer's warfare, his patience in tribulation may be encouraged by the joyfulness of hope; for he will, ere long, rest from sin and from sorrow in the Canaan above.

This chapter relates how that the kings of the northern parts of Canaan combine together against Joshua, Jos 11:1-5; and that the Lord encouraged him to fight with them, and did deliver them into his hands, who, with all their people, were smitten by him, Jos 11:6-11; and how that he took their cities, and destroyed the inhabitants of them, and took the spoil of them for a prey, Jos 11:12-15; and so became master of the whole country, both southern and northern, which is described Jos 11:16-20; and the chapter is concluded with an account of his cutting off the Anakim from various parts, which finished the conquest of the whole land, Jos 10:21-23.
