Josué 10

1 Israel derrota a los ejércitos del sur
Adonisedec, rey de Jerusalén, oyó que Josué había tomado y destruido por completo
la ciudad de Hai y había matado a su rey, lo mismo que había hecho con la ciudad de Jericó y su rey. También se enteró de que los gabaonitas habían hecho la paz con Israel y ahora eran sus aliados.

2 Cuando él y su pueblo oyeron todo eso, tuvieron mucho miedo, porque Gabaón era una ciudad grande, tan grande como las ciudades de la realeza y más grande que la ciudad de Hai. Además, los gabaonitas eran guerreros fuertes.

3 Entonces Adonisedec, rey de Jerusalén, envió mensajeros a varios otros reyes: a Hoham, rey de Hebrón, a Piream, rey de Jarmut, a Jafía, rey de Laquis y a Debir, rey de Eglón.

4 «Vengan y ayúdenme a destruir Gabaón —les rogó—, porque hizo la paz con Josué y con el pueblo de Israel».

5 Entonces esos cinco reyes amorreos unieron sus ejércitos para atacar en conjunto. Pusieron todas sus tropas en posición y atacaron Gabaón.

6 Enseguida, los hombres de Gabaón enviaron mensajeros a Josué, quien se encontraba en su campamento, en Gilgal. «¡No abandone a sus siervos ahora! —rogaron—. ¡Venga de inmediato! ¡Sálvenos! ¡Ayúdenos! Pues todos los reyes amorreos que viven en la zona montañosa unieron sus fuerzas para atacarnos».

7 Entonces Josué y todo su ejército, incluidos sus mejores guerreros, salieron de Gilgal hacia Gabaón.

8 «No les tengas miedo —le dijo el Señor
a Josué—, porque te he dado la victoria. Ni uno de ellos podrá hacerte frente».

9 Josué marchó toda la noche desde Gilgal y tomó por sorpresa a los ejércitos amorreos.

10 El Señor
llenó de pánico a los amorreos, y los israelitas masacraron a un gran número de ellos en Gabaón. Después persiguieron a sus enemigos por el camino que lleva a Bet-horón y los fueron matando a lo largo de toda la ruta a Azeca y Maceda.

11 Mientras los amorreos estaban en retirada por el camino de Bet-horón, el Señor
los destruyó mediante una terrible tormenta de granizo que envió desde el cielo, y que no paró hasta que llegaron a Azeca. El granizo mató a más enemigos de los que mataron los israelitas a filo de espada.

12 El día que el Señor
les dio a los israelitas la victoria sobre los amorreos, Josué oró al Señor
delante de todo el pueblo de Israel y dijo:
«Que el sol se detenga sobre Gabaón,
y la luna, sobre el valle de Ajalón».

13 Entonces el sol se detuvo y la luna se quedó en su sitio hasta que la nación de Israel terminó de derrotar a sus enemigos.

El sol se detuvo en medio del cielo y no se ocultó como en un día normal.

14 Jamás, ni antes ni después, hubo un día como ese, cuando el Señor
contestó semejante oración. ¡Sin duda, ese día el Señor
peleó por Israel!

15 Después Josué y el ejército israelita regresaron a su campamento, en Gilgal.

16 Josué mata a los cinco reyes del sur
Durante la batalla, los cinco reyes escaparon y se escondieron en una cueva, en Maceda.

17 Cuando Josué oyó que los habían encontrado,

18 dio la siguiente orden: «Cubran la abertura de la cueva con rocas grandes y pongan guardias en la entrada, para mantener adentro a los reyes.

19 Los demás continúen persiguiendo a los enemigos y mátenlos por la retaguardia. No los dejen volver a sus ciudades, porque el Señor
, Dios de ustedes, les ha dado la victoria sobre ellos».

20 Entonces Josué y el ejército israelita continuaron con la masacre y derrotaron al enemigo por completo. Exterminaron totalmente a los cinco ejércitos con excepción de un pequeño grupo que logró llegar a sus ciudades fortificadas.

21 Luego los israelitas volvieron a salvo al campamento de Maceda, donde estaba Josué. Después de eso, nadie se atrevió a decir ni una sola palabra en contra de Israel.

22 Luego Josué dijo: «Quiten las rocas que cubren la abertura de la cueva y tráiganme a los cinco reyes».

23 Así que hicieron salir de la cueva a los cinco reyes de las ciudades de Jerusalén, de Hebrón, de Jarmut, de Laquis y de Eglón.

24 Cuando los sacaron, Josué les dijo a los comandantes de su ejército: «Acérquense y pónganles el pie sobre el cuello a estos reyes». Y ellos hicieron lo que se les dijo.

25 «Jamás tengan miedo ni se desanimen —les dijo Josué a sus hombres—. Sean fuertes y valientes, porque el Señor
hará lo mismo con todos sus enemigos».

26 Entonces Josué mató a cada uno de los cinco reyes y los atravesó con cinco postes afilados, donde quedaron colgados hasta la tarde.

27 Mientras se ponía el sol, Josué mandó que descolgaran los cuerpos de los postes y que los arrojaran dentro de la cueva donde se habían escondido los reyes. Luego taparon la abertura de la cueva con un montón de rocas grandes, lo cual permanece allí hasta el día de hoy.

28 Israel destruye las ciudades del sur
Ese mismo día, Josué tomó y destruyó la ciudad de Maceda. Mató a todos sus habitantes, incluso al rey, y no dejó a nadie con vida. Los destruyó a todos y mató al rey de Maceda, lo mismo que había hecho con el rey de Jericó.

29 Después, Josué y los israelitas se dirigieron hacia Libna y la atacaron.

30 Allí también el Señor
les entregó la ciudad con su rey. Mató a todos sus habitantes sin dejar a nadie con vida. Luego Josué mató al rey de Libna, lo mismo que había hecho con el rey de Jericó.

31 De Libna, Josué y los israelitas fueron a Laquis y la atacaron.

32 Igual que en las veces anteriores, el Señor
les entregó Laquis. Josué la tomó el segundo día y mató a todos sus habitantes, tal como había hecho en Libna.

33 Durante el ataque a Laquis, el rey Horam, de Gezer, llegó con su ejército para ayudar a defender la ciudad. Pero los hombres de Josué lo mataron junto con su ejército y no dejaron a nadie con vida.

34 Luego Josué y el ejército israelita siguieron hacia la ciudad de Eglón y la atacaron.

35 La tomaron ese mismo día y mataron a todos sus habitantes. Josué destruyó a todos por completo, tal como había hecho en Laquis.

36 De Eglón, Josué y el ejército israelita subieron a Hebrón y la atacaron.

37 Tomaron la ciudad y mataron a todos sus habitantes, incluso al rey, y no dejaron a nadie con vida. Hicieron lo mismo con todas las aldeas vecinas. Y tal como había hecho en Eglón, Josué destruyó por completo a toda la población.

38 Después, Josué y los israelitas se volvieron y atacaron Debir.

39 Josué tomó la ciudad con su rey y todas las aldeas vecinas. Destruyó por completo a todos sus habitantes y no dejó a nadie con vida. Hizo a Debir y a su rey lo mismo que les había hecho a Hebrón, a Libna y a su rey.

40 Así que Josué conquistó toda la región: a los reyes y a los pueblos de la zona montañosa, el Neguev, las colinas occidentales
y las laderas de las montañas. Destruyó por completo a todos los habitantes del territorio sin dejar a nadie con vida, tal como el Señor
, Dios de Israel, lo había ordenado.

41 Josué los masacró desde Cades-barnea hasta Gaza y desde la región que rodea la ciudad de Gosén hasta Gabaón.

, Dios de Israel, peleaba por su pueblo.

Josué 10 Commentary

Chapter 10

Five kings war against Gibeon. (1-6) Joshua succours Gibeon The sun and moon stand still. (7-14) The kings are taken, their armies defeated, and they are put to death. (15-27) Seven other kings defeated and slain. (28-43)

Verses 1-6 When sinners leave the service of Satan and the friendship of the world, that they make peace with God and join Israel, they must not marvel if the world hate them, if their former friends become foes. By such methods Satan discourages many who are convinced of their danger, and almost persuaded to be Christians, but fear the cross. These things should quicken us to apply to God for protection, help, and deliverance.

Verses 7-14 The meanest and most feeble, who have just begun to trust the Lord, are as much entitled to be protected as those who have long and faithfully been his servants. It is our duty to defend the afflicted, who, like the Gibeonites, are brought into trouble on our account, or for the sake of the gospel. Joshua would not forsake his new vassals. How much less shall our true Joshua fail those who trust in Him! We may be wanting in our trust, but our trust never can want success. Yet God's promises are not to slacken and do away, but to quicken and encourage our endeavours. Notice the great faith of Joshua, and the power of God answering it by the miraculous staying of the sun, that the day of Israel's victories might be made longer. Joshua acted on this occasion by impulse on his mind from the Spirit of God. It was not necessary that Joshua should speak, or the miracle be recorded, according to the modern terms of astronomy. The sun appeared to the Israelites over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Ajalon, and there they appeared to be stopped on their course for one whole day. Is any thing too hard for the Lord? forms a sufficient answer to ten thousand difficulties, which objectors have in every age started against the truth of God as revealed in his written word. Proclamation was hereby made to the neighbouring nations, Behold the works of the Lord, and say, What nation is there so great as Israel, who has God so nigh unto them?

Verses 15-27 None moved his tongue against any of the children of Israel. This shows their perfect safety. The kings were called to an account, as rebels against the Israel of God. Refuges of lies will but secure for God's judgment. God punished the abominable wickedness of these kings, the measure of whose iniquity was now full. And by this public act of justice, done upon these ringleaders of the Canaanites in sin, he would possess his people with the greater dread and detestation of the sins of the nations that God cast out from before them. Here is a type and figure of Christ's victories over the powers of darkness, and of believers' victories through him. In our spiritual conflicts we must not be satisfied with obtaining some important victory. We must pursue our scattered enemies, searching out the remains of sin as they rise up in our hearts, and thus pursue the conquest. In so doing, the Lord will afford light until the warfare be accomplished.

Verses 28-43 Joshua made speed in taking these cities. See what a great deal of work may be done in a little time, if we will be diligent, and improve our opportunities. God here showed his hatred of the idolatries and other abominations of which the Canaanites had been guilty, and shows us how great the provocation was, by the greatness of the destruction brought upon them. Here also was typified the destruction of all the enemies of the Lord Jesus, who, having slighted the riches of his grace, must for ever feel the weight of his wrath. The Lord fought for Israel. They could not have gotten the victory, if God had not undertaken the battle. We conquer when God fights for us; if he be for us, who can be against us?

This chapter treats of the combination of five kings against the Gibeonites, Jos 10:1-5; and of the application of the Gibeonites to Joshua, for assistance, in virtue of the league between them, which was granted, Jos 10:6-9; of the slaughter of the army by the kings of Israel, and chiefly by hailstones from heaven, Jos 10:10,11; and of the standing still of the sun, and of the moon, while vengeance was taken on them, Jos 10:12-14; and of the five kings being hid in a cave, and of the usage of them when taken, Jos 10:15-27; and of the taking of Makkedah, Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir, Jos 10:28-39; which finished the conquest of the southern part of the land, Jos 10:40-43.
