Levítico 26

1 Bendiciones por la obediencia
»No se hagan ídolos, ni levanten en su tierra imágenes talladas ni columnas sagradas ni piedras esculpidas para rendirles culto. Yo soy el Señor
su Dios.

2 Deben guardar mis días de descanso y mostrar reverencia por mi santuario. Yo soy el Señor

3 »Si siguen mis decretos y se aseguran de obedecer mis mandatos,

4 les enviaré las lluvias de temporada. Entonces la tierra les dará sus cosechas y los árboles del campo producirán su fruto.

5 La temporada de la trilla continuará aun después del comienzo de la cosecha de la uva, y la cosecha de la uva continuará aun después de la temporada de la siembra del grano. Comerán hasta saciarse y vivirán en seguridad dentro de su tierra.

6 »Les daré paz en la tierra y podrán dormir sin temor alguno. Libraré la tierra de animales salvajes y mantendré a sus enemigos fuera del país.

7 De hecho, perseguirán a sus enemigos y los masacrarán a filo de espada.

8 ¡Cinco de ustedes perseguirán a cien, y cien de ustedes perseguirán a diez mil! Todos sus enemigos caerán bajo su espada.

9 »Los miraré con agrado, los haré fértiles y multiplicaré su pueblo. Cumpliré mi pacto con ustedes.

10 ¡Tendrán tal abundancia de cosechas que será necesario deshacerse del grano viejo para que haya lugar para la nueva cosecha!

11 Viviré entre ustedes y no los despreciaré.

12 Caminaré entre ustedes; seré su Dios, y ustedes serán mi pueblo.

13 Yo soy el Señor
su Dios, quien los sacó de la tierra de Egipto para que ya no fueran esclavos. Yo quebré de su cuello el yugo de la esclavitud, a fin de que puedan caminar con la cabeza en alto.

14 Castigos por la desobediencia
»Sin embargo, si no me escuchan ni obedecen todos estos mandatos,

15 y si rompen mi pacto al rechazar mis decretos, al tratar mis ordenanzas con desprecio y al rehusar obedecer mis mandatos,

16 yo los castigaré. Traeré sobre ustedes terrores repentinos: enfermedades debilitantes y altas fiebres que harán que sus ojos fallen y que su vida se consuma poco a poco. Sembrarán sus cosechas en vano porque sus enemigos se las comerán.

17 Me volveré contra ustedes, y sus enemigos los derrotarán. Aquellos quienes los odian los gobernarán, y ustedes huirán, ¡aun cuando nadie los esté persiguiendo!

18 »Y si a pesar de todo esto, todavía me desobedecen, los castigaré siete veces por sus pecados.

19 Quebrantaré su espíritu orgulloso al hacer que el cielo sea tan rígido como el hierro y la tierra tan dura como el bronce.

20 Todo su trabajo será en vano, porque la tierra no dará cosechas y los árboles no producirán fruto.

21 »Si aun así permanecen hostiles conmigo y rehúsan obedecerme, aumentaré siete veces el desastre a causa de sus pecados.

22 Enviaré animales salvajes que los privarán de sus hijos y destruirán su ganado. Ustedes disminuirán en número y sus caminos quedarán desiertos.

23 »Y si todavía no aprenden la lección y continúan su hostilidad hacia mí,

24 entonces yo mismo seré hostil con ustedes, y los castigaré siete veces con calamidades por sus pecados.

25 Enviaré ejércitos en su contra que llevarán a cabo la maldición del pacto que violaron. Cuando corran a sus ciudades buscando seguridad, les enviaré una plaga para destruirlos ahí mismo, y serán entregados en manos de sus enemigos.

26 Destruiré su provisión de alimentos, al punto de que diez mujeres necesitarán un solo horno para preparar el pan de sus familias. Ellas racionarán el alimento por peso, y aunque coman, no se saciarán.

27 »Si, a pesar de esto, todavía rehúsan escuchar y aún permanecen hostiles hacia mí,

28 entonces yo descargaré toda mi hostilidad. Yo mismo los castigaré siete veces por sus pecados.

29 Entonces comerán la carne de sus propios hijos e hijas.

30 Destruiré sus santuarios paganos y derribaré sus lugares de culto. Dejaré sus cuerpos sin vida apilados sobre sus ídolos sin vida,
y los despreciaré.

31 Haré que sus ciudades queden desoladas y destruiré sus lugares de culto pagano. No me agradaré de sus ofrendas, las cuales deberían ser un aroma agradable para mí.

32 Yo mismo devastaré su tierra, y los enemigos que vengan a apoderarse de ella quedarán horrorizados de lo que verán.

33 Los dispersaré entre las naciones y sacaré mi espada contra ustedes. Sus ciudades quedarán en ruinas y su tierra desolada.

34 Entonces, cuando quede desolada, mientras estén desterrados en la tierra de sus enemigos, al fin la tierra gozará de los años de descanso que le fueron negados. ¡Por fin descansará y gozará de los años de descanso que perdió!

35 Todo el tiempo que la tierra permanezca en ruinas, gozará del descanso que nunca le permitieron tener cada séptimo año que vivieron en ella.

36 »En cuanto a aquellos de ustedes que sobrevivan, los desmoralizaré en la tierra de sus enemigos. Vivirán en tanto temor que el sonido de una hoja llevada por el viento los hará huir. Correrán como si huyeran de una espada, y caerán aun cuando nadie los persiga.

37 Aunque nadie vaya tras de ustedes, tropezarán unos con otros, como si huyeran de una espada. No tendrán fuerza para hacerles frente a sus enemigos.

38 Morirán en las naciones extranjeras y serán devorados en la tierra de sus enemigos.

39 Aquellos de ustedes que sobrevivan se consumirán en las tierras de sus enemigos a causa de sus pecados y de los pecados de sus antepasados.

40 »Sin embargo, al fin mi pueblo confesará sus pecados y los pecados de sus antepasados por traicionarme y por ser hostiles hacia mí.

41 Cuando yo haga que su hostilidad se vuelva contra ellos y los lleve a la tierra de sus enemigos, entonces, por fin, su obstinado corazón será humillado y pagarán por sus pecados.

42 Entonces me acordaré de mi pacto con Jacob, de mi pacto con Isaac y de mi pacto con Abraham, y me acordaré de la tierra.

43 Pues la tierra tendrá que ser abandonada para que goce de sus años de descanso mientras quede desolada. Al fin el pueblo pagará por sus pecados, pues continuamente ha rechazado mis ordenanzas y despreciado mis decretos.

44 »A pesar de todo esto, cuando estén desterrados en la tierra de sus enemigos no los despreciaré ni los rechazaré por completo. No cancelaré mi pacto con ellos destruyéndolos, porque yo soy el Señor
su Dios.

45 Por amor a ellos me acordaré de mi antiguo pacto con sus antepasados, a quienes saqué de la tierra de Egipto a los ojos de todas las naciones, para ser su Dios. Yo soy el Señor

46 Estos son los decretos, las ordenanzas y las instrucciones que el Señor
dio por medio de Moisés en el monte Sinaí como evidencia de la relación entre él y los israelitas.

Levítico 26 Commentary

Chapter 26

Promises upon keeping the precepts. (1-13) Threatenings against disobedience. (14-39) God promises to remember those that repent. (40-46)

Verses 1-13 This chapter contains a general enforcement of all the laws given by Moses; by promises of reward in case of obedience, on the one hand; and threatenings of punishment for disobedience, on the other. While Israel maintained a national regard to God's worship, sabbaths, and sanctuary, and did not turn aside to idolatry, the Lord engaged to continue to them temporal mercies and religious advantages. These great and precious promises, though they relate chiefly to the life which now is, were typical of the spiritual blessings made sure by the covenant of grace to all believers, through Christ. 1. Plenty and abundance of the fruits of the earth. Every good and perfect gift must be expected from above, from the Father of lights. 2. Peace under the Divine protection. Those dwell in safety, that dwell in God. 3. Victory and success in their wars. It is all one with the Lord to save by many or by few. 4. The increase of their people. The gospel church shall be fruitful. 5. The favour of God, which is the fountain of all Good. 6. Tokens of his presence in and by his ordinances. The way to have God's ordinances fixed among us, is to cleave closely to them. 7. The grace of the covenant. All covenant blessings are summed up in the covenant relation, I will be your God, and ye shall be my people; and they are all grounded upon their redemption. Having purchased them, God would own them, and never cast them off till they cast him off.

Verses 14-39 After God has set the blessing before them which would make them a happy people if they would be obedient, he here sets the curse before them, the evils which would make them miserable, if they were disobedient. Two things would bring ruin. 1. A contempt of God's commandments. They that reject the precept, will come at last to renounce the covenant. 2. A contempt of his corrections. If they will not learn obedience by the things they suffer, God himself would be against them; and this is the root and cause of all their misery. And also, The whole creation would be at war with them. All God's sore judgments would be sent against them. The threatenings here are very particular, they were prophecies, and He that foresaw all their rebellions, knew they would prove so. TEMPORAL judgments are threatened. Those who will not be parted from their sins by the commands of God, shall be parted from them by judgments. Those wedded to their lusts, will have enough of them. SPIRITUAL judgments are threatened, which should seize the mind. They should find no acceptance with God. A guilty conscience would be their continual terror. It is righteous with God to leave those to despair of pardon, who presume to sin; and it is owing to free grace, if we are not left to pine away in the iniquity we were born in, and have lived in.

Verses 40-46 Among the Israelites, persons were not always prosperous or afflicted according to their obedience or disobedience. But national prosperity was the effect of national obedience, and national judgments were brought on by national wickedness. Israel was under a peculiar covenant. National wickedness will end in the ruin of any people, especially where the word of God and the light of the gospel are enjoyed. Sooner or later, sin will be the ruin, as well as the reproach, of every people. Oh that, being humbled for our sins, we might avert the rising storm before it bursts upon us! God grant that we may, in this our day, consider the things which belong to our eternal peace.

INTRODUCTION TO LEVITICUS 26

In this chapter, after a repetition of some laws against idolatry, and concerning keeping sabbaths, and reverencing the sanctuary of God, Le 26:1,2; in order to encourage the Israelites to keep the various statutes and commandments in this book, and in the preceding, many promises are made of plenty, and peace, and safety from enemies, and of the presence of God with them, Le 26:3-13; and on the contrary, to such as should despise and break his commandments, the most grievous things are threatened, as diseases of body, destruction by their enemies, barrenness and unfruitfulness of land, the sore judgments of wild beasts, famine, sword, and pestilence, Le 26:14-39; and yet after all, when they should confess their sins, and were humbled for them, the Lord promises to remember the covenant he made with their ancestors, and would deal kindly with them, and not cast them away, and utterly destroy them, Le 26:40-46.
