Números 20

1 Moisés golpea la roca
El primer mes del año,
toda la comunidad de Israel llegó al desierto de Zin y acampó en Cades. Mientras estaban allí, Miriam murió y la enterraron.

2 Ya que en ese lugar no había agua para que el pueblo bebiera, la gente se rebeló contra Moisés y Aarón.

3 El pueblo culpó a Moisés y dijo: «¡Si tan solo hubiéramos muerto con nuestros hermanos delante del Señor
!

4 ¿Por qué trajiste a la congregación del pueblo del Señor
a este desierto para morir, junto con todos nuestros animales?

5 ¿Por qué nos obligaste a salir de Egipto y nos trajiste a este terrible lugar? ¡Esta tierra no tiene grano ni higos ni uvas ni granadas ni agua para beber!».

6 Entonces Moisés y Aarón se apartaron del pueblo y fueron a la entrada del tabernáculo,
donde cayeron rostro en tierra. Allí la presencia gloriosa del Señor
se les apareció,

7 y el Señor
le dijo a Moisés:

8 «Tú y Aarón tomen la vara y reúnan a toda la comunidad. En presencia de todo el pueblo, háblale a la roca y de ella brotará agua. De la roca proveerás suficiente agua para satisfacer a toda la comunidad y a sus animales».

9 Así que Moisés hizo lo que se le dijo. Tomó la vara del lugar donde se guardaba en la presencia del Señor
.

10 Luego él y Aarón mandaron a llamar al pueblo a reunirse frente a la roca. «¡Escuchen, ustedes rebeldes! —gritó—. ¿Acaso debemos sacarles agua de esta roca?».

11 Enseguida Moisés levantó su mano y golpeó la roca dos veces con la vara y el agua brotó a chorros. Así que toda la comunidad y sus animales bebieron hasta saciarse.

12 Sin embargo, el Señor
les dijo a Moisés y a Aarón: «¡Puesto que no confiaron lo suficiente en mí para demostrar mi santidad a los israelitas, ustedes no los llevarán a la tierra que les doy!».

13 Por eso este lugar se conoce como las aguas de Meriba (que significa «discusión») porque allí el pueblo de Israel discutió con el Señor
y él demostró su santidad entre ellos.

14 Edom le niega el paso a Israel
Mientras Moisés estaba en Cades, envió embajadores al rey de Edom con el siguiente mensaje:
«Esto es lo que dicen tus parientes, los israelitas: tú sabes todas las dificultades por las que hemos pasado.

15 Nuestros antepasados bajaron a Egipto y allí vivimos un largo tiempo. Los egipcios nos maltrataron brutalmente, tanto a nosotros como a nuestros antepasados;

16 pero cuando clamamos al Señor
, él nos oyó y envió a un ángel que nos sacó de Egipto. Ahora estamos acampando en Cades, la ciudad en la frontera de tu territorio.

17 Por favor, permítenos atravesar tu territorio. Tendremos cuidado de no pasar por tus campos y viñedos, ni siquiera beberemos el agua de tus pozos. Seguiremos derecho por el camino real, sin desviarnos hasta que hayamos atravesado tu territorio».

18 Sin embargo, el rey de Edom dijo: «¡Quédense fuera de mi territorio o saldré a su encuentro con mi ejército!».

19 Entonces los israelitas le contestaron: «Nos mantendremos en el camino principal. Si nuestros animales beben de tu agua, te la pagaremos. Solo permítenos atravesar tu territorio; es todo lo que pedimos».

20 Aun así, el rey de Edom respondió: «¡Quédense fuera! Ustedes no pueden pasar por nuestra tierra». Dicho esto movilizó su ejército y salió contra ellos con una fuerza imponente.

21 Y como Edom no le permitió a los israelitas atravesar su país, se vieron obligados a regresar.

22 Muerte de Aarón
Toda la comunidad israelita partió de Cades y llegó al monte Hor.

23 Allí, en la frontera de la tierra de Edom, el Señor
les dijo a Moisés y a Aarón:

24 «Ha llegado el momento en que Aarón se reúna con sus antepasados al morir. Él no entrará a la tierra que le daré al pueblo de Israel, porque ustedes dos se rebelaron contra mis instrucciones con respecto al agua en Meriba.

25 Lleva a Aarón y a su hijo Eleazar y suban al monte Hor.

26 Ahí le quitarás las vestiduras sacerdotales a Aarón y se las pondrás a su hijo Eleazar. Aarón morirá allí y se reunirá con sus antepasados».

27 Así que Moisés hizo lo que el Señor
le ordenó. Los tres subieron juntos al monte Hor, mientras toda la comunidad observaba.

28 En la cumbre, Moisés le quitó las vestiduras sacerdotales a Aarón y se las puso a Eleazar, hijo de Aarón. Entonces Aarón murió en la cima de la montaña y Moisés y Eleazar descendieron.

29 Cuando el pueblo se dio cuenta de que Aarón había muerto, todo Israel lo lloró por treinta días.

Números 20 Commentary

Chapter 20

The people come to Zin, They murmur for water, Moses directed to smite the rock, The infirmity of Moses and Aaron. (1-13) The Israelites are refused a passage through Edom. (14-21) Aaron reigns the priest's office to Eleazar, and dies in mount Hor. (22-29)

Verses 1-13 After thirty-eight years' tedious abode in the wilderness, the armies of Israel advanced towards Canaan again. There was no water for the congregation. We live in a wanting world, and wherever we are, must expect to meet with something to put us out. It is a great mercy to have plenty of water, a mercy which, if we found the want of, we should more own the worth of. Hereupon they murmured against Moses and Aaron. They spake the same absurd and brutish language their fathers had done. It made their crime the worse, that they had smarted so long for the discontent and distrusts of their fathers, yet they venture in the same steps. Moses must again, in God's name, command water out of a rock for them; God is as able as ever to supply his people with what is needful for them. But Moses and Aaron acted wrong. They took much of the glory of this work of wonder to themselves; "Must we fetch water?" As if it were done by some power or worthiness of their own. They were to speak to the rock, but they smote it. Therefore it is charged upon them, that they did not sanctify God, that is, they did not give to him alone that glory of this miracle which was due unto his name. And being provoked by the people, Moses spake unadvisedly with his lips. The same pride of man would still usurp the office of the appointed Mediator; and become to ourselves wisdom, righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption. Such a state of sinful independence, such a rebellion of the soul against its Saviour, the voice of God condemns in every page of the gospel.

Verses 14-21 The nearest way to Canaan from the place where Israel encamped, was through the country of Edom. The ambassadors who were sent returned with a denial. The Edomites feared to receive damage by the Israelites. And had this numerous army been under any other discipline than that of the righteous God himself, there might have been cause for this jealousy. But Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing; and now the hatred revived, when the blessing was about to be inherited. We must not think it strange, if reasonable requests be denied by unreasonable men, and if those whom God favours be affronted by men.

Verses 22-29 God bids Aaron prepare to die. There is something of displeasure in these orders. Aaron must not enter Canaan, because he had failed in his duty at the waters of strife. There is much of mercy in them. Aaron, though he dies for his transgression, dies with ease, and in honour. He is gathered to his people, as one who dies in the arms of Divine grace. There is much significancy in these orders. Aaron must not enter Canaan, to show that the Levitical priesthood could make nothing perfect; that must be done by bringing in a better hope. Aaron submits, and dies in the method and manner appointed; and, for aught that appears, with as much cheerfulness as if he had been going to bed. It was a great satisfaction to Aaron to see his son, who was dear to him, preferred; and his office preserved and secured: especially, to see in this a figure of Christ's everlasting priesthood. A good man would desire, if it were the will of God, not to outlive his usefulness. Why should we covet to continue any longer in this world, than while we may do some service in it for God and our generation?

In this chapter is an account of the children of Israel coming to the wilderness of Zin, where Miriam died, and where wanting water they murmured, Nu 20:1-5, upon which Moses and Aaron applied to the Lord, who ordered Moses to speak to a rock, which should give forth water, and which being smitten by him, accordingly did, Nu 20:6-11, but Moses and Aaron, in their conduct of this affair, displeased the Lord, Nu 20:12,13, after this, Moses sent to the king of Edom to desire a passage through his country, which request was refused, Nu 20:14-21, upon Israel's coming to Mount Hor, Aaron, by order, went up to the mount, and, when stripped of his clothes, which were put on his son Eleazar, he died, lamented by all the people, Nu 20:22-29.
