Concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ1 and our being gathered to him,2 we ask you, brothers and sisters,
not to become easily unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us--whether by a prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter3--asserting that the day of the Lord4 has already come.53
Don't let anyone deceive you6 in any way, for [that day will not come] until the rebellion7 occurs and the man of lawlessnessa is revealed,8 the man doomed to destruction.
He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is called God9 or is worshiped, so that he sets himself up in God's temple, proclaiming himself to be God.105
Don't you remember that when I was with you I used to tell you these things?116
And now you know what is holding him back,12 so that he may be revealed at the proper time.
For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back13 will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way.
And then the lawless one will be revealed,14 whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth15 and destroy by the splendor of his coming.169
The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with how Satan17 works. He will use all sorts of displays of power through signs and wonders18 that serve the lie,
and all the ways that wickedness deceives those who are perishing.19 They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.2011
For this reason God sends them21 a powerful delusion22 so that they will believe the lie2312
and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.24
But we ought always to thank God for you,25 brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruitsb26 to be saved27 through the sanctifying work of the Spirit28 and through belief in the truth.
He called you29 to this through our gospel,30 that you might share in the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm31 and hold fast to the teachingsc we passed on to you,32 whether by word of mouth or by letter.
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father,33 who loved us34 and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope,
encourage35 your hearts and strengthen36 you in every good deed and word.
