1. Translation

One question many people have is which translation should I read. This is a valid and complex question. There are many good options, but today we will discuss the ESV Study Bible.
When looking at English translations of the Bible, many are translated differently; some are translated word for word and some are thought for thought, while others lean toward a contemporary English style to appeal to a broader audience.
The ESV Study Bible is a literal word-for-word translation retaining reverence for the original languages and tone. It has a modern readability factor while still maintaining accurate wording and meaning. It is highly regarded by many as a go-to translation due to its accuracy and readability.
2. Extensive Study Notes
With over 95 Bible scholars and teachers collaborating to offer notes and insight, the Study Notes portion is extensive. There are thousands of study notes within this Bible. They are found at the bottom of the pages and easily correspond with each verse, making it usable within the same page.
So how do you use these to improve your study? Read the Scripture first, then go back and read the notes. This is a helpful reminder to be sure God’s Word is the primary source of study and the notes serve as supplemental help.
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

3. Concordance

This is a section in the back of the Bible. It is an alphabetized list of words used within the Bible and has a list of Scripture references underneath it. You can easily do word studies and find where the word is used other places in the Bible.
Choose a word you want to look into and look it up in the concordance. Read the verses listed under that word. Then ask: what does this teach about God’s power, promises, or plan?
“Every word of God proves true; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him” (Proverbs 30:5).
4. Book Introductions
At the beginning of each book of the Bible is an exhaustive introduction to that book. You will find the author, the purpose, the audience being written to and other features in this section. These introductions are foundational for understanding the context of the book and reading with the right perspective to guide proper interpretation of the text.
Before beginning a new book of the Bible, read the introduction. Notice key themes and verses, then look for these as you read.

5. Charts

There are charts all throughout, from small to large. These help organize information for your understanding. They might include Bible characters, themes, genealogies, or other important information in an organized chart.
When you see a chart, stop and take notice. See what you can learn and connect. Charts often bring clarity to portions of Scripture that might otherwise feel overwhelming or complex.
“But all things should be done decently and in order” (1 Corinthians 14:40).
6. Timelines
Throughout the Bible you will find timelines of events. These help readers understand how the story unfolds and how certain books overlap each other, telling the same stories from a different perspective or with unique details.
As you read, take time to look at the timelines. Do not skip over them. Timing helps us put events in perspective and understand the big picture.

7. Full-Color Maps

This is a key feature that sets this Bible apart from others that are similar. The maps are extensive. This visual aid puts the Bible in 3D, giving not only the narrative but also the ability to understand where things took place.
When you read a portion of Scripture and notice a location mentioned, find it on the map. This will help with visualizing where things happened throughout the Bible, helping put the entire story together.
8. Illustrations
Along with full color maps, there are also many full-color illustrations. This helps us see biblical architecture, ancient building structures, and items that were used. The illustrations are an enjoyable aspect that generate deeper understanding of what is being discussed.
These visuals help bridge the gap between ancient Eastern culture and the modern day culture of the west. This makes the history memorable and tangible.
