Deuteronomio 4

1 Ahora pues, oh Israel, escucha los estatutos y los juicios que yo os enseño para que los ejecutéis, a fin de que viváis y entréis a tomar posesión de la tierra que el SEÑOR, el Dios de vuestros padres, os da.

2 No añadiréis nada a la palabra que yo os mando, ni quitaréis nada de ella, para que guardéis los mandamientos del SEÑOR vuestro Dios que yo os mando.

3 Vuestros ojos han visto lo que hizo el SEÑOR en el caso de Baal-peor, pues a todo hombre que siguió a Baal-peor, el SEÑOR vuestro Dios lo destruyó de en medio de ti.

4 Mas vosotros, que permanecisteis fieles al SEÑOR vuestro Dios, todos estáis vivos hoy.

5 Mirad, yo os he enseñado estatutos y juicios tal como el SEÑOR mi Dios me ordenó, para que hagáis así en medio de la tierra en que vais a entrar para poseerla.

6 Así que guardadlos y ponedlos por obra, porque esta será vuestra sabiduría y vuestra inteligencia ante los ojos de los pueblos que al escuchar todos estos estatutos, dirán: "Ciertamente esta gran nación es un pueblo sabio e inteligente."

7 Porque, ¿qué nación grande hay que tenga un dios tan cerca de ella como está el SEÑOR nuestro Dios siempre que le invocamos?

8 ¿O qué nación grande hay que tenga estatutos y juicios tan justos como toda esta ley que yo pongo hoy delante de vosotros?

9 Por tanto, cuídate y guarda tu alma con diligencia, para que no te olvides de las cosas que tus ojos han visto, y no se aparten de tu corazón todos los días de tu vida; sino que las hagas saber a tus hijos y a tus nietos.

10 Recuerda el día que estuviste delante del SEÑOR tu Dios en Horeb, cuando el SEÑOR me dijo: "Reúneme el pueblo para que yo les haga oír mis palabras, a fin de que aprendan a temerme todos los días que vivan sobre la tierra y las enseñen a sus hijos."

11 Os acercasteis, pues, y permanecisteis al pie del monte, y el monte ardía en fuego hasta el mismo cielo: oscuridad, nube y densas tinieblas.

12 Entonces el SEÑOR os habló de en medio del fuego; oísteis su voz, sólo la voz, pero no visteis figura alguna.

13 Y El os declaró su pacto, el cual os mandó poner por obra: esto es, los diez mandamientos, y los escribió en dos tablas de piedra.

14 Y el SEÑOR me ordenó en aquella ocasión que os enseñara estatutos y juicios, a fin de que los pusierais por obra en la tierra a la cual vais a entrar para poseerla.

15 Así que guardaos bien, ya que no visteis ninguna figura el día en que el SEÑOR os habló en Horeb de en medio del fuego;

16 no sea que os corrompáis y hagáis para vosotros una imagen tallada semejante a cualquier figura: semejanza de varón o hembra,

17 semejanza de cualquier animal que está en la tierra, semejanza de cualquier ave que vuela en el cielo,

18 semejanza de cualquier animal que se arrastra sobre la tierra, semejanza de cualquier pez que hay en las aguas debajo de la tierra.

19 No sea que levantes los ojos al cielo y veas el sol, la luna, las estrellas y todo el ejército del cielo, y seas impulsado a adorarlos y servirlos, cosas que el SEÑOR tu Dios ha concedido a todos los pueblos debajo de todos los cielos.

20 Pero a vosotros el SEÑOR os ha tomado y os ha sacado del horno de hierro, de Egipto, para que seáis pueblo de su heredad como lo sois ahora.

21 Y el SEÑOR se enojó conmigo a causa de vosotros, y juró que yo no pasaría el Jordán, ni entraría en la buena tierra que el SEÑOR tu Dios te da por heredad.

22 Porque yo moriré en esta tierra, no cruzaré el Jordán; mas vosotros pasaréis y tomaréis posesión de esta buena tierra.

23 Guardaos, pues, no sea que olvidéis el pacto que el SEÑOR vuestro Dios hizo con vosotros, y os hagáis imagen tallada en forma de cualquier cosa que el SEÑOR tu Dios te ha prohibido.

24 Porque el SEÑOR vuestro Dios es fuego consumidor, un Dios celoso.

25 Cuando hayáis engendrado hijos y nietos, y hayáis permanecido largo tiempo en la tierra, y os corrompáis y hagáis un ídolo en forma de cualquier cosa, y hagáis lo que es malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR vuestro Dios para provocarle a ira,

26 pongo hoy por testigo contra vosotros al cielo y a la tierra, que pronto seréis totalmente exterminados de la tierra donde vais a pasar el Jordán para poseerla. No viviréis por mucho tiempo en ella, sino que seréis totalmente destruidos.

27 Y el SEÑOR os dispersará entre los pueblos, y quedaréis pocos en número entre las naciones adonde el SEÑOR os llevará.

28 Allí serviréis a dioses hechos por manos de hombre, de madera y de piedra, que no ven, ni oyen, ni comen, ni huelen.

29 Pero de allí buscarás al SEÑOR tu Dios, y lo hallarás si lo buscas con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma.

30 En los postreros días, cuando estés angustiado y todas esas cosas te sobrevengan, volverás al SEÑOR tu Dios y escucharás su voz.

31 Pues el SEÑOR tu Dios es Dios compasivo; no te abandonará, ni te destruirá, ni olvidará el pacto que El juró a tus padres.

32 Ciertamente, pregunta ahora acerca de los tiempos pasados que fueron antes de ti, desde el día en que Dios creó al hombre sobre la tierra; inquiere desde un extremo de los cielos hasta el otro. ¿Se ha hecho cosa tan grande como ésta, o se ha oído algo como esto?

33 ¿Ha oído pueblo alguno la voz de Dios, hablando de en medio del fuego, como tú la has oído, y ha sobrevivido?

34 ¿O ha intentado dios alguno tomar para sí una nación de en medio de otra nación, con pruebas, con señales y maravillas, con guerra y mano fuerte y con brazo extendido y hechos aterradores, como el SEÑOR tu Dios hizo por ti en Egipto delante de tus ojos?

35 A ti te fue mostrado, para que supieras que el SEÑOR, El es Dios; ningún otro hay fuera de El.

36 Desde los cielos te hizo oír su voz para disciplinarte; y sobre la tierra te hizo ver su gran fuego, y oíste sus palabras de en medio del fuego.

37 Porque El amó a tus padres, por eso escogió a su descendencia después de ellos; y personalmente te sacó de Egipto con su gran poder,

38 expulsando delante de ti naciones más grandes y más poderosas que tú, para hacerte entrar y darte la tierra de ellos por heredad, como sucede hoy.

39 Por tanto, reconoce hoy y reflexiona en tu corazón, que el SEÑOR es Dios arriba en los cielos y abajo en la tierra; no hay otro.

40 Así pues, guardarás sus estatutos y sus mandamientos que yo te ordeno hoy, a fin de que te vaya bien a ti y a tus hijos después de ti, y para que prolongues tus días sobre la tierra que el SEÑOR tu Dios te da para siempre.

41 Entonces Moisés designó tres ciudades al otro lado del Jordán, al oriente,

42 para que huyera allí el homicida que involuntariamente hubiera matado a su vecino sin haber tenido enemistad contra él en el pasado; y huyendo a una de estas ciudades, salvara su vida:

43 Beser en el desierto, sobre la meseta, para los rubenitas, y Ramot en Galaad para los gaditas, y Golán en Basán para los de Manasés.

44 Esta es, pues, la ley que Moisés puso delante de los hijos de Israel.

45 Estos son los testimonios, los estatutos y las ordenanzas que Moisés dio a los hijos de Israel cuando salieron de Egipto,

46 al otro lado del Jordán en el valle frente a Bet-peor, en la tierra de Sehón, rey de los amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón, a quien Moisés y los hijos de Israel derrotaron cuando salieron de Egipto.

47 Y tomaron posesión de su tierra y de la tierra de Og, rey de Basán, los dos reyes de los amorreos que estaban al otro lado del Jordán hacia el oriente,

48 desde Aroer, que está a la orilla del valle del Arnón, hasta el monte Sion, es decir, Hermón,

49 con todo el Arabá al otro lado del Jordán, al oriente, hasta el mar del Arabá, al pie de las laderas del Pisga.

Deuteronomio 4 Commentary

Chapter 4

Earnest exhortations to obedience, and dissuasives from idolatry. (1-23) Warnings against disobedience, and promises of mercy. (24-40) Cities of refuge appointed. (41-49)

Verses 1-23 The power and love of God to Israel are here made the ground and reason of a number of cautions and serious warnings; and although there is much reference to their national covenant, yet all may be applied to those who live under the gospel. What are laws made for but to be observed and obeyed? Our obedience as individuals cannot merit salvation; but it is the only evidence that we are partakers of the gift of God, which is eternal life through Jesus Christ, Considering how many temptations we are compassed with, and what corrupt desires we have in our bosoms, we have great need to keep our hearts with all diligence. Those cannot walk aright, who walk carelessly. Moses charges particularly to take heed of the sin of idolatry. He shows how weak the temptation would be to those who thought aright; for these pretended gods, the sun, moon, and stars, were only blessings which the Lord their God had imparted to all nations. It is absurd to worship them; shall we serve those that were made to serve us? Take heed lest ye forget the covenant of the Lord your God. We must take heed lest at any time we forget our religion. Care, caution, and watchfulness, are helps against a bad memory.

Verses 24-40 Moses urged the greatness, glory, and goodness of God. Did we consider what a God he is with whom we have to do, we should surely make conscience of our duty to him, and not dare to sin against him. Shall we forsake a merciful God, who will never forsake us, if we are faithful unto him? Whither can we go? Let us be held to our duty by the bonds of love, and prevailed with by the mercies of God to cleave to him. Moses urged God's authority over them, and their obligations to him. In keeping God's commandments they would act wisely for themselves. The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom. Those who enjoy the benefit of Divine light and laws, ought to support their character for wisdom and honour, that God may be glorified thereby. Those who call upon God, shall certainly find him within call, ready to give an answer of peace to every prayer of faith. All these statutes and judgments of the Divine law are just and righteous, above the statutes and judgments of any of the nations. What they saw at mount Sinai, gave an earnest of the day of judgment, in which the Lord Jesus shall be revealed in flaming fire. They must also remember what they heard at mount Sinai. God manifests himself in the works of the creation, without speech or language, yet their voice is heard, Ps. 19:1, Ps. 19:3 ; but to Israel he made himself known by speech and language, condescending to their weakness. The rise of this nation was quite different from the origin of all other nations. See the reasons of free grace; we are not beloved for our own sakes, but for Christ's sake. Moses urged the certain benefit and advantage of obedience. This argument he had begun with, ver. ( Deuteronomy 4:1 ) , That ye may live, and go in and possess the land; and this he concludes with, ver. ( Deuteronomy 4:40 ) , That it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee. He reminds them that their prosperity would depend upon their piety. Apostacy from God would undoubtedly be the ruin of their nation. He foresees their revolt from God to idols. Those, and those only, shall find God to their comfort, who seek him with all their heart. Afflictions engage and quicken us to seek God; and, by the grace of God working with them, many are thus brought back to their right mind. When these things are come upon thee, turn to the Lord thy God, for thou seest what comes of turning from him. Let all the arguments be laid together, and then say, if religion has not reason on its side. None cast off the government of their God, but those who first abandon the understanding of a man.

Verses 41-49 Here is the introduction to another discourse, or sermon, Moses preached to Israel, which we have in the following chapters. He sets the law before them, as the rule they were to work by, the way they were to walk in. He sets it before them, as the glass in which they were to see their natural face, that, looking into this perfect law of liberty, they might continue therein. These are the laws, given when Israel was newly come out of Egypt; and they were now repeated. Moses gave these laws in charge, while they encamped over against Beth-peor, an idol place of the Moabites. Their present triumphs were a powerful argument for obedience. And we should understand our own situation as sinners, and the nature of that gracious covenant to which we are invited. Therein greater things are shown to us than ever Israel saw from mount Sinai; greater mercies are given to us than they experienced in the wilderness, or in Canaan. One speaks to us, who is of infinitely greater dignity than Moses; who bare our sins upon the cross; and pleads with us by His dying love.

This chapter contains an exhortation to Israel to keep the commands, statutes, and judgments of God, urged from the superior excellency of them to those of all other nations, De 4:1-8, from the manner in which they were delivered, out of the midst of fire, by a voice of words, but no similitude seen, De 4:9-15, and particularly the Israelites are cautioned against idolatry, from the consideration of the goodness of God to them, in bringing them out of Egypt, De 4:16-20, and the rather Moses is urgent upon them to be diligent in their obedience to the laws of God, because he should quickly be removed from them, De 4:21-24, and should they be disobedient to them, it would provoke the Lord to destroy them, or to carry them captive into other lands, De 4:25-28 though even then, if they repented and sought the Lord, and became obedient, he would be merciful to them, and not forsake them, De 4:29-31 and they are put in mind again of the amazing things God had done for them, in speaking to them out of fire, and they alive; in bringing them out of another nation, and driving out other nations to make room for them; all which he improves, as so many arguments to move them to obedience to the divine commands, De 4:32-40 and then notice is taken of the three cities of refuge, separated on this side Jordan, De 4:41-43, and the chapter is concluded with observing, that this is the law, and these the testimonies, Moses declared and repeated to the children of Israel in the country of Sihon and Og, who were delivered into their hands, and their lands possessed by them, which laid them under fresh obligations to yield obedience to God, De 4:44-49.
