Warning To Be Watchful (21:34-38)

34 Jesus has given in this chapter a description of the signs preceding the end of the world, at which time Jesus will come again. Here in this section, He warns us to be watchful. We cannot know when exactly He will come again, but we must remain ready for Him (see Mark 13:32-33 and comment).

Therefore, Jesus warns us: “Be careful,” lest our hearts be weighed down with dissipation, drunkenness and the anxieties of life. Christ’s second coming will be like that of a master who returns unexpectedly from a trip. What will He find His servants doing? Therefore, let us be awake and not sleeping; let us be working diligently at the job Jesus has given us. He will return at any time (see Matthew 24:48-51; Mark 13:34-37; 1 Thessalonians 5:4-8 and comments).

It is not important to know when Jesus is coming. In fact, it is not our place to know (Acts 1:7). It is only important that we be ready at all times. If we remain always ready and watching, that day cannot come on us like a trap.

35 That day of Christ’s return in judgment will come upon all men—believers and non-believers, Jews and Gentiles.

36 There will be terrible persecution in those days, and many will fall away (Matthew 24:10-12). We must pray that we shall escape the temptation to fall back, to leave the faith, to deny Christ. For only he who stands firm to the end will be saved (Mark 13:13). Only those whose faith remains firm will be able to stand before the Son of Man on the day of judgment (see Hebrews 10:35-39 and comment).

37-38 During that final week in Jerusalem, Jesus taught each day in the temple. And each evening He left the city and spent the night in the town of Bethany, located on the Mount of Olives just outside Jerusalem (Mark 11:1,11).
