When the days of mourning for him were past, Josephspoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, "Ifnow I have foundfavor in your sight, pleasespeak to Pharaoh, saying,

'My father made me swear, saying, "Behold, I am about to die; in my gravewhich I dug for myself in the land of Canaan, there you shall bury me." Now therefore, please let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.' "

So Josephwent up to bury his father, and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household and all the elders of the land of Egypt,

and all the household of Joseph and his brothers and his father'shousehold; they leftonly their littleones and their flocks and their herds in the land of Goshen.

When they came to the threshingfloor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamentedthere with a verygreat and sorrowfullamentation; and he observedsevendaysmourning for his father.

Now when the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning at the threshingfloor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievousmourning for the Egyptians." Therefore* it was named*Abel-mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan.

Thus his sonsdid for him as he had charged them;

for his sonscarried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelahbefore*Mamre, whichAbraham had bought along with the field for a burialsite from Ephron the Hittite.

When Joseph'sbrotherssaw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Josephbears a grudgeagainst us and pays us back in full for all the wrongwhich we did to him!"

'Thus you shall say to Joseph, "Pleaseforgive, I beg you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, for they did you wrong."' And now, pleaseforgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father." And Josephwept when they spoke to him.

Josephsaid to his brothers, "I am about to die, but God will surelytakecare of you and bring you up from thisland to the landwhich He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob."
