Lamentaciones 4

1 El enojo de Dios queda satisfecho
¡Cómo perdió su brillo el oro!
Hasta el oro más preciado se volvió opaco.
¡Las piedras preciosas sagradas
yacen esparcidas en las calles!

2 Miren cómo los preciosos hijos de Jerusalén,
que valen su peso en oro puro,
ahora son tratados como vasijas de barro
hechas por un alfarero común y corriente.

3 Hasta los chacales amamantan a sus cachorros,
pero mi pueblo Israel no lo hace;
ignoran los llantos de sus hijos,
como los avestruces del desierto.

4 La lengua reseca de sus pequeños,
se pega al paladar a causa de la sed.
Los niños lloran por pan,
pero nadie tiene para darles.

5 Los que antes comían los manjares más ricos
ahora mendigan en las calles por cualquier cosa que puedan obtener.
Los que antes vestían ropa de la más alta calidad
ahora hurgan en los basureros buscando qué comer.

6 La culpa
de mi pueblo
es mayor que la de Sodoma,
cuando en un instante cayó el desastre total
y nadie ofreció ayuda.

7 Nuestros príncipes antes rebosaban de salud,
más brillantes que la nieve, más blancos que la leche.
Sus rostros eran tan rosados como rubíes,
su aspecto como joyas preciosas.

8 Pero ahora sus caras son más negras que el carbón;
nadie los reconoce en las calles.
La piel se les pega a los huesos;
está tan seca y dura como la madera.

9 Los que murieron a espada terminaron mejor
que los que mueren de hambre.
Hambrientos, se consumen
por la falta de comida de los campos.

10 Mujeres de buen corazón
han cocinado a sus propios hijos;
los comieron
para sobrevivir el sitio.

11 Pero ahora, quedó satisfecho el enojo del Señor
;
su ira feroz ha sido derramada.
Prendió un fuego en Jerusalén
que quemó la ciudad hasta sus cimientos.

12 Ningún rey sobre toda la tierra,
nadie en todo el mundo,
hubiera podido creer que un enemigo
lograra entrar por las puertas de Jerusalén.

13 No obstante, ocurrió a causa de los pecados de sus profetas
y de los pecados de sus sacerdotes,
que profanaron la ciudad
al derramar sangre inocente.

14 Vagaban a ciegas
por las calles,
tan contaminados por la sangre
que nadie se atrevía a tocarlos.

15 «¡Apártense! —les gritaba la gente—,
¡ustedes están contaminados! ¡No nos toquen!».
Así que huyeron a tierras distantes
y deambularon entre naciones extranjeras,
pero nadie les permitió quedarse.

16 El Señor
mismo los dispersó,
y ya no los ayuda.
La gente no tiene respeto por los sacerdotes
y ya no honra a los líderes.

17 En vano esperamos que nuestros aliados
vinieran a salvarnos,
pero buscábamos socorro en naciones
que no podían ayudarnos.

18 Era imposible andar por las calles
sin poner en peligro la vida.
Se acercaba nuestro fin; nuestros días estaban contados.
¡Estábamos condenados!

19 Nuestros enemigos fueron más veloces que las águilas en vuelo.
Si huíamos a las montañas, nos encontraban;
si nos escondíamos en el desierto,
allí estaban esperándonos.

20 Nuestro rey —el ungido del Señor
, la vida misma de nuestra nación—
quedó atrapado en sus lazos.
¡Pensábamos que su sombra
nos protegería contra cualquier nación de la tierra!

21 ¿Te estás alegrando en la tierra de Uz,
oh pueblo de Edom?
Tú también beberás de la copa del enojo del Señor
;
tú también serás desnudada en tu borrachera.

22 Oh, bella Jerusalén,
tu castigo tendrá fin;
pronto regresarás del destierro.
Pero Edom, tu castigo apenas comienza;
pronto serán puestos al descubierto tus muchos pecados.

Lamentaciones 4 Commentary

Chapter 4

The deplorable state of the nation is contrasted with its ancient prosperity.

Verses 1-12 What a change is here! Sin tarnishes the beauty of the most exalted powers and the most excellent gifts; but that gold, tried in the fire, which Christ bestows, never will be taken from us; its outward appearance may be dimmed, but its real value can never be changed. The horrors of the siege and destruction of Jerusalem are again described. Beholding the sad consequences of sin in the church of old, let us seriously consider to what the same causes may justly bring down the church now. But, Lord, though we have gone from thee in rebellion, yet turn to us, and turn our hearts to thee, that we may fear thy name. Come to us, bless us with awakening, converting, renewing, confirming grace.

Verses 13-20 Nothing ripens a people more for ruin, nor fills the measure faster, than the sins of priests and prophets. The king himself cannot escape, for Divine vengeance pursues him. Our anointed King alone is the life of our souls; we may safely live under his shadow, and rejoice in Him in the midst of our enemies, for He is the true God and eternal life.

Verses 21-22 Here it is foretold that an end should be put to Zion's troubles. Not the fulness of punishment deserved, but of what God has determined to inflict. An end shall be put to Edom's triumphs. All the troubles of the church and of the believer will soon be accomplished. And the doom of their enemies approaches. The Lord will bring their sins to light, and they shall lie down in eternal sorrow. Edom here represents all the enemies of the church. And the corruption, and sin of Israel, which the prophet has proved to be universal, justifies the judgments of the Lord. It shows the need of that grace in Christ Jesus, which the sin and corruption of all mankind make so necessary.

The prophet begins this chapter with a complaint of the ill usage of the dear children of God, and precious sons of Zion, La 4:1,2; relates the dreadful effects of the famine during the siege of Jerusalem, La 4:3-10; the taking and destruction of that city he imputes to the wrath of God; and represents it as incredible to the kings and inhabitants of the earth, La 4:11,12; the causes of which were the sins of the prophets, priests, and people, La 4:13-16; expresses the vain hopes they once had, but now were given up entirely, their king being taken, La 4:17-20; and the chapter is concluded with a prophecy of the destruction of the Edomites, and of the return of the Jews from captivity, La 4:21,22.
