Marcos 4

1 Parábola del sembrador
Una vez más Jesús comenzó a enseñar a la orilla del lago. Pronto se reunió una gran multitud alrededor de él, así que entró en una barca. Luego se sentó en la barca, mientras que toda la gente permanecía en la orilla.

2 Les enseñaba por medio de historias que contaba en forma de parábola, como la siguiente:

3 «¡Escuchen! Un agricultor salió a sembrar.

4 A medida que esparcía la semilla por el campo, algunas cayeron sobre el camino y los pájaros vinieron y se las comieron.

5 Otras cayeron en tierra poco profunda con roca debajo de ella. Las semillas germinaron con rapidez porque la tierra era poco profunda;

6 pero pronto las plantas se marchitaron bajo el calor del sol y, como no tenían raíces profundas, murieron.

7 Otras semillas cayeron entre espinos, los cuales crecieron y ahogaron los brotes, así que esos brotes no produjeron grano.

8 Pero otras semillas cayeron en tierra fértil, y germinaron y crecieron, ¡y produjeron una cosecha que fue treinta, sesenta y hasta cien veces más numerosa de lo que se había sembrado!».

9 Luego les dijo:

10 Más tarde, cuando Jesús se quedó a solas con los doce discípulos y con las demás personas que se habían reunido, le preguntaron el significado de las parábolas.

11 Él contestó:

12 para que se cumplan las Escrituras:
“Cuando ellos vean lo que hago,
no aprenderán nada.
Cuando oigan lo que digo,
no entenderán.
De lo contrario, se volverían a mí
y serían perdonados”
».

13 Luego Jesús les dijo:

14 El agricultor siembra las semillas al llevar la palabra de Dios a otros.

15 Las semillas que cayeron en el camino representan a los que oyen el mensaje, pero enseguida viene Satanás y lo quita.

16 Las semillas sobre la tierra rocosa representan a los que oyen el mensaje y de inmediato lo reciben con alegría;

17 pero como no tienen raíces profundas, no duran mucho. En cuanto tienen problemas o son perseguidos por creer la palabra de Dios, caen.

18 Las semillas que cayeron entre los espinos representan a los que oyen la palabra de Dios,

19 pero muy pronto el mensaje queda desplazado por las preocupaciones de esta vida, el atractivo de la riqueza y el deseo por otras cosas, así que no se produce ningún fruto.

20 Y las semillas que cayeron en la buena tierra representan a los que oyen y aceptan la palabra de Dios, ¡y producen una cosecha treinta, sesenta y hasta cien veces más numerosa de lo que se había sembrado!».

21 Parábola de la lámpara
Entonces Jesús les preguntó:

22 Pues todo lo que está escondido tarde o temprano se descubrirá y todo secreto saldrá a la luz.

23 El que tenga oídos para oír debería escuchar y entender».

24 Luego agregó:

25 A los que escuchan mis enseñanzas se les dará más entendimiento, pero a los que no escuchan, se les quitará aun lo poco que entiendan».

26 Parábola de la semilla que crece
Jesús también dijo:

27 Día y noche, sea que él esté dormido o despierto, la semilla brota y crece, pero él no entiende cómo sucede.

28 La tierra produce las cosechas por sí sola. Primero aparece una hoja, luego se forma la espiga y finalmente el grano madura.

29 Tan pronto como el grano está listo, el agricultor lo corta con la hoz porque ha llegado el tiempo de la cosecha».

30 Parábola de la semilla de mostaza
Jesús dijo:

31 Es como una semilla de mostaza sembrada en la tierra. Es la más pequeña de todas las semillas,

32 pero se convierte en la planta más grande del huerto; sus ramas llegan a ser tan grandes que los pájaros hacen nidos bajo su sombra».

33 Jesús empleó muchas historias e ilustraciones similares para enseñar a la gente, tanto como pudieran entender.

34 De hecho, durante su ministerio público nunca enseñó sin usar parábolas; pero después, cuando estaba a solas con sus discípulos, les explicaba todo a ellos.

35 Jesús calma la tormenta
Al atardecer, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos:

36 Así que dejaron a las multitudes y salieron con Jesús en la barca (aunque otras barcas los siguieron).

37 Pronto se desató una tormenta feroz y olas violentas entraban en la barca, la cual empezó a llenarse de agua.

38 Jesús estaba dormido en la parte posterior de la barca, con la cabeza recostada en una almohada. Los discípulos lo despertaron: «¡Maestro! ¿No te importa que nos ahoguemos?», gritaron.

39 Cuando Jesús se despertó, reprendió al viento y dijo a las olas:
De repente, el viento se detuvo y hubo una gran calma.

40 Luego él les preguntó:

41 Los discípulos estaban completamente aterrados. «¿Quién es este hombre? —se preguntaban unos a otros—. ¡Hasta el viento y las olas lo obedecen!».

Chapter 4

The parable of the sower. (1-20) Other parables. (21-34) Christ stills the tempest. (35-41)

Verses 1-20 This parable contained instruction so important, that all capable of hearing were bound to attend to it. There are many things we are concerned to know; and if we understand not the plain truths of the gospel, how shall we learn those more difficult! It will help us to value the privileges we enjoy as disciples of Christ, if we seriously consider the deplorable state of all who have not such privileges. In the great field of the church, the word of God is dispensed to all. Of the many that hear the word of the gospel, but few receive it, so as to bring forth fruit. Many are much affected with the word for the present, who yet receive no abiding benefit. The word does not leave abiding impressions upon the minds of men, because their hearts are not duly disposed to receive it. The devil is very busy about careless hearers, as the fowls of the air go about the seed that lies above ground. Many continue in a barren, false profession, and go down to hell. Impressions that are not deep, will not last. Many do not mind heart-work, without which religion is nothing. Others are hindered from profiting by the word of God, by abundance of the world. And those who have but little of the world, may yet be ruined by indulging the body. God expects and requires fruit from those who enjoy the gospel, a temper of mind and Christian graces daily exercised, Christian duties duly performed. Let us look to the Lord, that by his new-creating grace our hearts may become good ground, and that the good seed of the word may produce in our lives those good words and works which are through Jesus Christ, to the praise and glory of God the Father.

Verses 21-34 These declarations were intended to call the attention of the disciples to the word of Christ. By his thus instructing them, they were made able to instruct others; as candles are lighted, not to be covered, but to be placed on a candlestick, that they may give light to a room. This parable of the good seed, shows the manner in which the kingdom of God makes progress in the world. Let but the word of Christ have the place it ought to have in a soul, and it will show itself in a good conversation. It grows gradually: first the blade; then the ear; after that the full corn in the ear. When it is sprung up, it will go forward. The work of grace in the soul is, at first, but the day of small things; yet it has mighty products even now, while it is in its growth; but what will there be when it is perfected in heaven!

Verses 35-41 Christ was asleep in the storm, to try the faith of his disciples, and to stir them up to pray. Their faith appeared weak, and their prayers strong. When our wicked hearts are like the troubled sea which cannot rest, when our passions are unruly, let us think we hear the law of Christ, saying, Be silent, be dumb. When without are fightings, and within are fears, and the spirits are in a tumult, if he say, "Peace, be still," there is a great calm at once. Why are ye so fearful? Though there may be cause for some fear, yet not for such fear as this. Those may suspect their faith, who can have such a thought as that Jesus careth not though his people perish. How imperfect are the best of saints! Faith and fear take their turns while we are in this world; but ere long, fear will be overcome, and faith will be lost in sight.
