Gedeón

1 Los israelitas hicieron lo que ofende al SEÑOR, y él los entregó en manos de los madianitas durante siete años.

2 Era tal la tiranía de los madianitas que los israelitas se hicieron escondites en las montañas, las cuevas y otros lugares de refugio.

3 Siempre que los israelitas sembraban, los madianitas, amalecitas y otros pueblos del oriente venían y los atacaban.

4 Acampaban y arruinaban las cosechas por todo el territorio, hasta la región de Gaza. No dejaban en Israel nada con vida: ni ovejas, ni bueyes ni asnos.

5 Llegaban con su ganado y con sus carpas como plaga de langostas. Tanto ellos como sus camellos eran incontables, e invadían el país para devastarlo.

6 Era tal la miseria de los israelitas por causa de los madianitas, que clamaron al SEÑOR pidiendo ayuda.

7 Cuando los israelitas clamaron al SEÑOR a causa de los madianitas,

8 el SEÑOR les envió un profeta que dijo: «Así dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: “Yo los saqué de Egipto, tierra de esclavitud,

9 y los libré de su poder. También los libré del poder de todos sus opresores, a quienes expulsé de la presencia de ustedes para entregarles su tierra”.

10 Les dije: “Yo soy el SEÑOR su Dios; no adoren a los dioses de los amorreos, en cuya tierra viven”. Pero ustedes no me obedecieron».

11 El ángel del SEÑOR vino y se sentó bajo la encina que estaba en Ofra, la cual pertenecía a Joás, del clan de Abiezer. Su hijo Gedeón estaba trillando trigo en un lagar, para protegerlo de los madianitas.

12 Cuando el ángel del SEÑOR se le apareció a Gedeón, le dijo:—¡El SEÑOR está contigo, guerrero valiente!

13 —Pero, señor —replicó Gedeón—, si el SEÑOR está con nosotros, ¿cómo es que nos sucede todo esto? ¿Dónde están todas las maravillas que nos contaban nuestros padres, cuando decían: “¡El SEÑOR nos sacó de Egipto!”? ¡La verdad es que el SEÑOR nos ha desamparado y nos ha entregado en manos de Madián!

14 El SEÑOR lo encaró y le dijo:—Ve con la fuerza que tienes, y salvarás a Israel del poder de Madián. Yo soy quien te envía.

15 —Pero, Señor —objetó Gedeón—, ¿cómo voy a salvar a Israel? Mi clan es el más débil de la tribu de Manasés, y yo soy el más insignificante de mi familia.

16 El SEÑOR respondió:—Tú derrotarás a los madianitas como si fueran un solo hombre, porque yo estaré contigo.

17 —Si me he ganado tu favor, dame una señal de que en realidad eres tú quien habla conmigo —respondió Gedeón—.

18 Te ruego que no te vayas hasta que yo vuelva y traiga mi ofrenda y la ponga ante ti.—Esperaré hasta que vuelvas —le dijo el SEÑOR.

19 Gedeón se fue a preparar un cabrito; además, con una medida^[a] de harina hizo panes sin levadura. Luego puso la carne en una canasta y el caldo en una olla, y los llevó y se los ofreció al ángel bajo la encina.

20 El ángel de Dios le dijo:—Toma la carne y el pan sin levadura, y ponlos sobre esta roca; y derrama el caldo.Y así lo hizo Gedeón.

21 Entonces, con la punta del bastón que llevaba en la mano, el ángel del SEÑOR tocó la carne y el pan sin levadura, ¡y de la roca salió fuego, que consumió la carne y el pan! Luego el ángel del SEÑOR desapareció de su vista.

22 Cuando Gedeón se dio cuenta de que se trataba del ángel del SEÑOR, exclamó:—¡Ay de mí, SEÑOR y Dios! ¡He visto al ángel del SEÑOR cara a cara!

23 Pero el SEÑOR le dijo:—¡Quédate tranquilo! No temas. No vas a morir.

24 Entonces Gedeón construyó allí un altar al SEÑOR, y lo llamó «El SEÑOR es la paz», el cual hasta el día de hoy se encuentra en Ofra de Abiezer.

25 Aquella misma noche el SEÑOR le dijo: «Toma un toro del rebaño de tu padre; el segundo, el que tiene siete años.^[b] Derriba el altar que tu padre ha dedicado a Baal, y el poste con la imagen de la diosa Aserá que está junto a él.

26 Luego, sobre la cima de este lugar de refugio, construye un altar apropiado^[c] para el SEÑOR tu Dios. Toma entonces la leña del poste de Aserá que cortaste, y ofrece el segundo toro^[d] como un holocausto».

27 Gedeón llevó a diez de sus siervos e hizo lo que el SEÑOR le había ordenado. Pero en lugar de hacerlo de día lo hizo de noche, pues tenía miedo de su familia y de los hombres de la ciudad.

28 Cuando los hombres de la ciudad se levantaron por la mañana, vieron que el altar de Baal estaba destruido, que el poste con la imagen de la diosa Aserá estaba cortado, y que el segundo toro había sido sacrificado sobre el altar recién construido.

29 Entonces se preguntaban el uno al otro: «¿Quién habrá hecho esto?» Luego de investigar cuidadosamente, llegaron a la conclusión: «Gedeón hijo de Joás lo hizo».

30 Entonces los hombres de la ciudad le exigieron a Joás:—Saca a tu hijo, pues debe morir, porque destruyó el altar de Baal y derribó la imagen de Aserá que estaba junto a él.

31 Pero Joás le respondió a todos los que lo amenazaban:—¿Acaso van ustedes a defender a Baal? ¿Creen que lo van a salvar? ¡Cualquiera que defienda a Baal, que muera antes del amanecer! Si de veras Baal es un dios, debe poder defenderse de quien destruya su altar.

32 Por eso aquel día llamaron a Gedeón «Yerubaal»,^[e] diciendo: «Que Baal se defienda contra él», porque él destruyó su altar.

33 Todos los madianitas y amalecitas, y otros pueblos del oriente, se aliaron y cruzaron el Jordán, acampando en el valle de Jezrel.

34 Entonces Gedeón, poseído por el Espíritu del SEÑOR, tocó la trompeta, y todos los del clan de Abiezer fueron convocados a seguirlo.

35 Envió mensajeros a toda la tribu de Manasés, convocándolos para que lo siguieran, y además los envió a Aser, Zabulón y Neftalí, de modo que también estos se le unieron.

36 Gedeón le dijo a Dios: «Si has de salvar a Israel por mi conducto, como has prometido,

37 mira, tenderé un vellón de lana en la era, sobre el suelo. Si el rocío cae solo sobre el vellón y todo el suelo alrededor queda seco, entonces sabré que salvarás a Israel por mi conducto, como prometiste».

38 Y así sucedió. Al día siguiente Gedeón se levantó temprano, exprimió el vellón para sacarle el rocío, y llenó una taza de agua.

39 Entonces Gedeón le dijo a Dios: «No te enojes conmigo. Déjame hacer solo una petición más. Permíteme hacer una prueba más con el vellón. Esta vez haz que solo el vellón quede seco, y que todo el suelo quede cubierto de rocío».

40 Así lo hizo Dios aquella noche. Solo el vellón quedó seco, mientras que todo el suelo estaba cubierto de rocío.

Chapter 6

Israel oppressed by Midianites. (1-6) Israel rebuked by a prophet. (7-10) Gideon set to deliver Israel. (11-24) Gideon destroys Baal's altar. (25-32) Signs given him. (33-40)

Verses 1-6 Israel's sin was renewed, and Israel's troubles were repeated. Let all that sin expect to suffer. The Israelites hid themselves in dens and caves; such was the effect of a guilty conscience. Sin dispirits men. The invaders left no food for Israel, except what was taken into the caves. They prepared that for Baal with which God should have been served, now God justly sends an enemy to take it away in the season thereof.

Verses 7-10 They cried to God for a deliverer, and he sent them a prophet to teach them. When God furnishes a land with faithful ministers, it is a token that he has mercy in store for it. He charges them with rebellion against the Lord; he intends to bring them to repentance. Repentance is real when the sinfulness of sin, as disobedience to God, is chiefly lamented.

Verses 11-24 Gideon was a man of a brave, active spirit, yet in obscurity through the times: he is here stirred up to undertake something great. It was very sure that the Lord was with him, when his Angel was with him. Gideon was weak in faith, which made it hard to reconcile the assurances of the presence of God with the distress to which Israel was brought. The Angel answered his objections. He told him to appear and act as Israel's deliverer, there needed no more. Bishop Hall says, While God calls Gideon valiant, he makes him so. God delights to advance the humble. Gideon desires to have his faith confirmed. Now, under the influences of the Spirit, we are not to expect signs before our eyes such as Gideon here desired, but must earnestly pray to God, that if we have found grace in his sight, he would show us a sign in our heart, by the powerful working of his Spirit there, The Angel turned the meat into an offering made by fire; showing that he was not a man who needed meat, but the Son of God, who was to be served and honoured by sacrifice, and who in the fulness of time was to make himself a sacrifice. Hereby a sign was given to Gideon, that he had found grace in God's sight. Ever since man has by sin exposed himself to God's wrath and curse, a message from heaven has been a terror to him, as he scarcely dares to expect good tidings thence. In this world, it is very awful to have any converse with that world of spirits to which we are so much strangers. Gideon's courage failed him. But God spoke peace to him.

Verses 25-32 See the power of God's grace, that he could raise up a reformer; and the kindness of his grace, that he would raise up a deliverer, out of the family of a leader in idolatry. Gideon must not think it enough not to worship at that altar; he must throw it down, and offer sacrifice on another. It was needful he should make peace with God, before he made war on Midian. Till sin be pardoned through the great Sacrifice, no good is to be expected. God, who has all hearts in his hands, influenced Joash to appear for his son against the advocates for Baal, though he had joined formerly in the worship of Baal. Let us do our duty, and trust God with our safety. Here is a challenge to Baal, to do either good or evil; the result convinced his worshippers of their folly, in praying to one to help them that could not avenge himself.

Verses 33-40 These signs are truly miraculous, and very significant. Gideon and his men were going to fight the Midianites; could God distinguish between a small fleece of Israel, and the vast floor of Midian? Gideon is made to know that God could do so. Is Gideon desirous that the dew of Divine grace might come down upon himself in particular? He sees the fleece wet with dew to assure him of it. Does he desire that God will be as the dew to all Israel? Behold, all the ground is wet. What cause we sinners of the Gentiles have, to bless the Lord that the dew of heavenly blessings, once confined to Israel, is now sent to all the inhabitants of the earth! Yet still the means of grace are in different measures, according to the purposes of God. In the same congregation, one man's soul is like Gideon's moistened fleece, another like the dry ground.

In this chapter we have an account of the distressed condition Israel was in through the Midianites, Jud 6:1-6, of a prophet being sent unto them to reprieve them for their sins, Jud 6:7-10 of an angel appearing to Gideon, with an order to him to go and save Israel out of the hands of the Midianites, Jud 6:11-16 and of a sign given him by the angel, whereby he knew this order was of God, Jud 6:17-24, and of the reformation from idolatry in his father's family he made upon this, throwing down the altar of Baal, and building one for the Lord, Jud 6:25-32, and of the preparation he made to fight the Midianites and others, Jud 6:33-35, but first desired a sign of the Lord, that Israel would be saved by his hand, which was granted and repeated, Jud 6:36-40.
