Joel 3

O Julgamento das Nações

1 “Sim, naqueles dias e naquele tempo,quando eu restaurar a sorte de Judá e de Jerusalém,

2 reunirei todos os povose os farei descer ao vale de Josafá.^[a]Ali os julgareipor causa da minha herança—Israel, o meu povo—;pois o espalharam entre as naçõese repartiram entre si a minha terra.

3 Lançaram sortes sobre o meu povoe deram meninos em troca de prostitutas;venderam meninas por vinho, para se embriagarem.

4 “O que vocês têm contra mim, Tiro, Sidom, e todas as regiões da Filístia? Vocês estão me retribuindo algo que eu fiz a vocês? Se estão querendo vingar-se de mim, ágil e veloz me vingarei do que vocês têm feito.

5 Pois roubaram a minha prata e o meu ouro e levaram para os seus templos os meus tesouros mais valiosos.

6 Vocês venderam o povo de Judá e o de Jerusalém aos gregos, mandando-os para longe da sua terra natal.

7 “Vou tirá-los dos lugares para onde os venderam e sobre vocês farei recair o que fizeram:

8 venderei os filhos e as filhas de vocês ao povo de Judá, e eles os venderão à distante nação dos sabeus”. Assim disse o SENHOR.

9 Proclamem isto entre as nações:Preparem-se para a guerra!Despertem os guerreiros!Todos os homens de guerra, aproximem-se e ataquem.

10 Forjem os seus arados,fazendo deles espadas;e de suas foices façam lanças.Diga o fraco: “Sou um guerreiro!”

11 Venham depressa, vocês, nações vizinhas,e reúnam-se ali.Faze descer os teus guerreiros, ó SENHOR!

12 “Despertem, nações;avancem para o vale de Josafá,pois ali me assentareipara julgar todas as nações vizinhas.

13 Lancem a foice,pois a colheita está madura.Venham, pisem com força as uvas,pois o lagar está cheioe os tonéis transbordam,tão grande é a maldade dessas nações!”

14 Multidões, multidõesno vale da Decisão!Pois o dia do SENHOR está próximo,no vale da Decisão.

15 O sol e a lua escurecerão,e as estrelas já não brilharão.

16 O SENHOR rugirá de Sião,e de Jerusalém levantará a sua voz;a terra e o céu tremerão.Mas o SENHOR será um refúgio para o seu povo,uma fortaleza para Israel.

Bênçãos para o Povo de Deus

17 “Então vocês saberão que eu sou o SENHOR, o seu Deus,que habito em Sião, o meu santo monte.Jerusalém será santa;e estrangeiros jamais a conquistarão.

18 “Naquele dia, os montes gotejarão vinho novo;das colinas manará leite;todos os ribeiros de Judá terão água corrente.Uma fonte fluirá do templo doe regará o vale das Acácias.

19 Mas o Egito ficará desolado,Edom será um deserto arrasado,por causa da violência feita ao povo de Judá,em cuja terra derramaram sangue inocente.

20 Judá será habitada para sempree Jerusalém por todas as gerações.

21 Sua culpa de sangue, ainda não perdoada,eu a perdoarei”.O SENHOR habita em Sião!

Joel 3 Commentary

Chapter 3

God's judgments in the latter days. (1-8) The extent of these judgments. (9-17) The blessings the church shall enjoy. (18-21)

Verses 1-8 The restoration of the Jews, and the final victory of true religion over all opposers, appear to be here foretold. The contempt and scorn with which the Jews have often been treated as a people, and the little value set upon them, are noticed. None ever hardened his heart against God or his church, and prospered long.

Verses 9-17 Here is a challenge to all the enemies of God's people. There is no escaping God's judgments; hardened sinners, in that day of wrath, shall be cut off from all comfort and joy. Most of the prophets foretell the same final victory of the church of God over all that oppose it. To the wicked it will be a terrible day, but to the righteous it will be a joyful day. What cause have those who possess an interest in Christ, to glory in their Strength and their Redeemer! The acceptable year of the Lord, a day of such great favour to some, will be a day of remarkable vengeance to others: let every one that is out of Christ awake, and flee from the wrath to come.

Verses 18-21 There shall be abundant Divine influences, and the gospel will spread speedily into the remotest corners of the earth. These events are predicted under significant emblems; there is a day coming, when every thing amiss shall be amended. The fountain of this plenty is in the house of God, whence the streams take rise. Christ is this Fountain; his sufferings, merit, and grace, cleanse, refresh, and make fruitful. Gospel grace, flowing from Christ, shall reach to the Gentile world, to the most remote regions, and make them abound in fruits of righteousness; and from the house of the Lord above, from his heavenly temple, flows all the good we daily taste, and hope to enjoy eternally.

This chapter, which some make the fourth, contains a prophecy of God's judgments on all the antichristian nations at the time of the Jews' conversion, and the reasons of them, Joe 3:1-3; a threatening of Tyre and Zidon, by way of retaliation, for carrying the riches of the Jews into their temples, and selling their persons to the Greeks, Joe 3:4-8; an alarm to prepare for the battle of Armageddon, or the destruction that shall be made in the valley of Jehoshaphat, Joe 3:9-15; and after that an account of the happy state of the church of Christ, their safety and security, plenty, prosperity, and purity, to the end of the world, Joe 3:16-21.
