What does the Bible say about the Euphrates River?

Did you know the Euphrates River is mentioned in both the first and last books of the Bible: Genesis and Revelation? This river is cited over 50 times throughout the Bible, a geographical reference that is part of the beginning and end of the world in scripture!

In Genesis 2, the Euphrates River is described as one of the four rivers that flowed out of the Garden of Eden. In Deuteronomy 1, God promises to give the Israelites the land from the Euphrates to the Mediterranean Sea. In Isaiah 8, the prophet Isaiah uses the Euphrates as a symbol of the Assyrian Empire, which threatened to invade Israel. And in Revelation 16, the Euphrates is described as drying up in preparation for the Battle of Armageddon.

Overall, the Euphrates River serves as a significant geographical and symbolic element throughout the Bible and still has a role to play in God's plan.

14 “Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”
