1
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,1 To God's elect,2 strangers in the world,3 scattered4 throughout Pontus,5 Galatia,6 Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia,72
who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge8 of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit,9 for obedience10 to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by his blood:11 Grace and peace be yours in abundance.12
3
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!13 In his great mercy14 he has given us new birth15 into a living hope16 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,174
and into an inheritance18 that can never perish, spoil or fade19--kept in heaven for you,205
who through faith are shielded by God's power21 until the coming of the salvation22 that is ready to be revealed23 in the last time.
6
In this you greatly rejoice,24 though now for a little while25 you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.267
These have come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire27--may be proved genuine28 and may result in praise, glory and honor29 when Jesus Christ is revealed.308
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him31 and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy,
9
for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.3210
Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke33 of the grace that was to come to you,34 searched intently and with the greatest care,3511
trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ36 in them was pointing when he predicted37 the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow.
12
It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you,38 when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you39 by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven.40 Even angels long to look into these things.
13
Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled;41 set your hope42 fully on the grace to be given you43 when Jesus Christ is revealed.4414
As obedient45 children, do not conform46 to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.4715
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;4816
for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy."a4917
Since you call on a Father50 who judges each man's work51 impartially,52 live your lives as strangers53 here in reverent fear.5418
For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed55 from the empty way of life56 handed down to you from your forefathers,
19
but with the precious blood57 of Christ, a lamb58 without blemish or defect.5920
He was chosen before the creation of the world,60 but was revealed in these last times61 for your sake.
21
Through him you believe in God,62 who raised him from the dead63 and glorified him,64 and so your faith and hope65 are in God.
22
Now that you have purified66 yourselves by obeying67 the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply,68 from the heart.b23
For you have been born again,69 not of perishable seed, but of imperishable,70 through the living and enduring word of God.7124
For, "All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25
but the word of the Lord stands forever."c72 And this is the word that was preached to you.
