The Beginning

1 In the beginning¹ God created² the heavens³ and the earth.⁴ 2 Now the earth was^a formless⁵ and empty,⁶ darkness was over the surface of the deep,⁷ and the Spirit of God⁸ was hovering⁹ over the waters. 3 And God said,¹⁰ "Let there be light," and there was light.¹¹ 4 God saw that the light was good,¹² and he separated the light from the darkness.¹³ 5 God called¹⁴ the light "day," and the darkness he called "night."¹⁵ And there was evening, and there was morning¹⁶--the first day. 6 And God said,¹⁷ "Let there be an expanse¹⁸ between the waters¹⁹ to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it.²⁰ And it was so.²¹ 8 God called²² the expanse "sky."²³ And there was evening, and there was morning²⁴--the second day. 9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place,²⁵ and let dry ground²⁶ appear." And it was so.²⁷ 10 God called²⁸ the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters²⁹ he called "seas."³⁰ And God saw that it was good.³¹ 11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation:³² seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.³³" And it was so.³⁴ 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds³⁵ and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.³⁶ 13 And there was evening, and there was morning³⁷--the third day. 14 And God said, "Let there be lights³⁸ in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night,³⁹ and let them serve as signs⁴⁰ to mark seasons⁴¹ and days and years,⁴² 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so.⁴³ 16 God made two great lights--the greater light⁴⁴ to govern⁴⁵ the day and the lesser light to govern⁴⁶ the night.⁴⁷ He also made the stars.⁴⁸ 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night,⁴⁹ and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.⁵⁰ 19 And there was evening, and there was morning⁵¹--the fourth day. 20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures,⁵² and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."⁵³ 21 So God created⁵⁴ the great creatures of the sea⁵⁵ and every living and moving thing with which the water teems,⁵⁶ according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind.⁵⁷ And God saw that it was good.⁵⁸ 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth."⁵⁹ 23 And there was evening, and there was morning⁶⁰--the fifth day. 24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures⁶¹ according to their kinds:⁶² livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so.⁶³ 25 God made the wild animals⁶⁴ according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds.⁶⁵ And God saw that it was good.⁶⁶ 26 Then God said, "Let us⁶⁷ make man⁶⁸ in our image,⁶⁹ in our likeness,⁷⁰ and let them rule⁷¹ over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air,⁷² over the livestock, over all the earth,^b and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God created⁷³ man⁷⁴ in his own image,⁷⁵ in the image of God⁷⁶ he created him; male and female⁷⁷ he created them.⁷⁸ 28 God blessed them and said to them,⁷⁹ "Be fruitful and increase in number;⁸⁰ fill the earth⁸¹ and subdue it. Rule over⁸² the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.⁸³" 29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.⁸⁴ 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground--everything that has the breath of life⁸⁵ in it--I give every green plant for food.⁸⁶" And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made,⁸⁷ and it was very good.⁸⁸ And there was evening, and there was morning⁸⁹--the sixth day.
