Ask and see: Can a man bear children? Then why do I see every strong man with his hands on his stomach like a woman in labor,1 every face turned deathly pale?27
How awful that day3 will be! None will be like it. It will be a time of trouble4 for Jacob, but he will be saved5 out of it.
" 'In that day,' declares the LORD Almighty, 'I will break the yoke6 off their necks and will tear off their bonds;7 no longer will foreigners enslave them.89
Instead, they will serve the LORD their God and David9 their king,10 whom I will raise up for them.
" 'So do not fear,11 O Jacob my servant;12 do not be dismayed, O Israel,' declares the LORD. 'I will surely save13 you out of a distant place, your descendants from the land of their exile. Jacob will again have peace and security,14 and no one will make him afraid.1511
I am with you16 and will save you,' declares the LORD. 'Though I completely destroy all the nations among which I scatter you, I will not completely destroy17 you. I will discipline18 you but only with justice; I will not let you go entirely unpunished.'1912
"This is what the LORD says: " 'Your wound20 is incurable, your injury beyond healing.2113
There is no one to plead your cause,22 no remedy for your sore, no healing23 for you.
All your allies24 have forgotten you; they care nothing for you. I have struck you as an enemy25 would and punished you as would the cruel,26 because your guilt is so great and your sins27 so many.
Why do you cry out over your wound, your pain that has no cure?28 Because of your great guilt and many sins I have done these things to you.2916
" 'But all who devour30 you will be devoured; all your enemies will go into exile.31 Those who plunder32 you will be plundered; all who make spoil of you I will despoil.
