Today's New International Version (TNIV) New International Version (NIV)
Why, LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
In their arrogance the wicked hunt down the weak, catching them in the schemes they devise. 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises.
They boast about the cravings of their hearts; they bless the greedy and revile the LORD. 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD.
In their pride the wicked do not seek him; in all their thoughts there is no room for God. 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
Their ways are always prosperous; your laws are rejected by them; they sneer at all their enemies. 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies.
They say to themselves, "Nothing will ever shake us." They swear, "No one will ever do us harm." 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble."
Their mouths are full of lies and threats; trouble and evil are under their tongues. 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue.
They lie in wait near the villages; from ambush they murder the innocent. Their eyes watch in secret for their victims; 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims.
like a lion in cover they lie in wait. They lie in wait to catch the helpless; they catch the helpless and drag them off in their nets. 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net.
[The innocent] are crushed, they collapse; they fall victim to superior strength. 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength.
The wicked say to themselves, "God will never notice; he covers his face and never sees." 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees."
Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless.
Why do the wicked revile God? Why do they say to themselves, "He won't call us to account"? 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"?
But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.
Break the arms of the wicked and the evildoers; call them to account for their wickedness that would not otherwise be found out. 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out.
The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land.
You, LORD, hear the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry,
defending the fatherless and the oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike terror. 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
