2 Samuel 10

1 Sucedió después de esto que murió el rey de los hijos de Amón, y su hijo Hanún reinó en su lugar.

2 Y David dijo: Seré bondadoso con Hanún, hijo de Nahas, tal como su padre fue bondadoso conmigo. Envió, pues, David algunos de sus siervos para consolarlo por la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando los siervos de David llegaron a la tierra de los amonitas,

3 los príncipes de los amonitas dijeron a Hanún su señor: ¿Crees tú que David está honrando a tu padre porque te ha enviado consoladores? ¿No te ha enviado David sus siervos para reconocer la ciudad, para espiarla y conquistarla?

4 Entonces Hanún tomó a los siervos de David, les rasuró la mitad de la barba, les cortó los vestidos por la mitad hasta las caderas, y los despidió.

5 Cuando le avisaron a David, envió a encontrarlos, porque los hombres estaban sumamente avergonzados. Y el rey les dijo: Quedaos en Jericó hasta que os crezca la barba, y después volved.

6 Al ver los hijos de Amón que se habían hecho odiosos a David, los hijos de Amón mandaron a tomar a sueldo a los arameos de Bet-rehob y a los arameos de Soba, veinte mil soldados de a pie, y del rey de Maaca mil hombres, y de Is-tob doce mil hombres.

7 Cuando David se enteró, envió a Joab y a todo el ejército de los valientes.

8 Y los hijos de Amón salieron y se pusieron en orden de batalla a la entrada de la ciudad, mientras que los arameos de Soba y de Rehob y los hombres de Is-tob y de Maaca estaban aparte en el campo.

9 Viendo Joab que se le presentaba batalla por el frente y por la retaguardia, escogió de entre todos los mejores hombres de Israel, y los puso en orden de batalla contra los arameos.

10 Al resto del pueblo lo colocó al mando de su hermano Abisai y lo puso en orden de batalla contra los hijos de Amón.

11 Y dijo: Si los arameos son demasiado fuertes para mí, entonces tú me ayudarás, y si los hijos de Amón son demasiado fuertes para ti, entonces vendré en tu ayuda.

12 Esfuérzate, y mostrémonos valientes por amor a nuestro pueblo y por amor a las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y que el SEÑOR haga lo que le parezca bien.

13 Entonces se acercó Joab con el pueblo que estaba con él para pelear contra los arameos, y éstos huyeron delante de él.

14 Cuando los hijos de Amón vieron que los arameos huían, ellos también huyeron delante de Abisai y entraron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab se volvió de pelear contra los hijos de Amón y vino a Jerusalén.

15 Al ver los arameos que habían sido derrotados por Israel, volvieron a concentrarse.

16 Hadad-ezer mandó sacar a los arameos que estaban al otro lado del río y fueron a Helam; y Sobac, jefe del ejército de Hadad-ezer, iba al frente de ellos.

17 Cuando se dio aviso a David, éste reunió a todo Israel, cruzó el Jordán y llegó a Helam. Los arameos se pusieron en orden de batalla para enfrentarse a David, y pelearon contra él.

18 Pero los arameos huyeron delante de Israel, y David mató a setecientos hombres de los carros de los arameos, y a cuarenta mil hombres de a caballo, e hirió a Sobac, jefe de su ejército, el cual murió allí.

19 Cuando todos los reyes, siervos de Hadad-ezer, vieron que habían sido derrotados por Israel, hicieron la paz con Israel y le sirvieron. Y los arameos tuvieron temor de ayudar más a los hijos de Amón.

Chapter 10

David's messengers ill-treated by Hanun. (1-5) The Ammonites defeated. (6-14) The Syrians defeated. (15-19)

Verses 1-5 Nahash had been an enemy to Israel, yet had showed kindness to David. David therefore resolves gratefully to return it. If a Pharisee gives alms in pride, though God will not reward it, yet he that receives the alms ought to return thanks for it. Those who bear ill-will to their neighbours, are resolved not to believe that their neighbours bear any good-will to them. There is nothing so well meant, but it may be ill interpreted, and is wont to be so, by men who love nobody but themselves. The best men must not think it strange if they are thus misrepresented. Charity thinketh no evil. According to the usages of those days and countries, Hanun treated David's ambassadors in the most contemptuous manner. David showed much concern for his servants. Let us learn not to lay unjust reproaches to heart; they will wear off, and turn only to the shame of those who utter or do them; while the reputation wrongfully hurt in a little time grows again, as these beards did. God will bring forth thy righteousness as the light, therefore wait patiently for him, ( psalms 37:6 psalms 37:7 ) .

Verses 6-14 They that are at war with the Son of David, not only give the provocation, but begin the war. God has forces to send against those that set his wrath at defiance, ( Isaiah 5:19 ) , which will convince them that none ever hardened his heart against God, and prospered. Christ's soldiers should strengthen one another's hands in their spiritual warfare. Let nothing be wanting in us, whatever the success be. When we make conscience of doing our duty, we may, with satisfaction, leave the event with God, assuredly hoping for his salvation in his own way and time.

Verses 15-19 Here is a new attempt of the Syrians. Even the baffled cause will make head as long as there is any life in it; the enemies of the Son of David do so. But now the promise made to Abraham, #Ge. 15:18 |, and repeated to Joshua, ( Joshua 1:4 ) , that the borders of Israel should extend to the river Euphrates, was performed. Learn hence, that it is dangerous to help those who have God against them; for when they fall, their helpers will fall with them.

This chapter gives an account of the ill treatment of David's messengers to the king of Ammon, who were sent to condole the death of his father, and were basely used by him, which David resented, 2Sa 10:1-5; which the Ammonites perceiving prepared for war, and got the Syrians to be confederates with them; of which David being informed, sent Joab and Abishai into their country, 2Sa 10:6-8; who divided the army between them, and attacked the Ammonites and Syrians with great courage, and routed them both, and returned to Jerusalem, 2Sa 10:9-14; after which the Syrians gathered together again to fight with David, who went out to meet them, and got an entire conquest over them, and made them servants to him, 2Sa 10:15-19.
