Bendiciones de la obediencia

1 »No se hagan ídolos, ni levanten imágenes ni piedras sagradas. No coloquen en su territorio piedras esculpidas ni se inclinen ante ellas. Yo soy el SEÑOR su Dios.

2 »Observen mis sábados y muestren reverencia por mi santuario. Yo soy el SEÑOR.

3 »Si se conducen según mis estatutos, y obedecen fielmente mis mandamientos,

4 yo les enviaré lluvia a su tiempo, y la tierra y los árboles del campo darán sus frutos;

5 la trilla durará hasta la vendimia, y la vendimia durará hasta la siembra. Comerán hasta saciarse y vivirán seguros en su tierra.

6 »Yo traeré paz al país, y ustedes podrán dormir sin ningún temor. Quitaré de la tierra las bestias salvajes, y no habrá guerra en su territorio.

7 Perseguirán a sus enemigos, y ante ustedes caerán a filo de espada.

8 Cinco de ustedes perseguirán a cien, y cien de ustedes perseguirán a diez mil, y ante ustedes sus enemigos caerán a filo de espada.

9 »Yo les mostraré mi favor. Yo los haré fecundos. Los multiplicaré, y mantendré mi pacto con ustedes.

10 Todavía estarán comiendo de la cosecha del año anterior cuando tendrán que sacarla para dar lugar a la nueva.

11 Estableceré mi morada en medio de ustedes, y no los aborreceré.

12 Caminaré entre ustedes. Yo seré su Dios, y ustedes serán mi pueblo.

13 Yo soy el SEÑOR su Dios, que los saqué de Egipto para que dejaran de ser esclavos. Yo rompí las coyundas de su yugo y los hice caminar con la cabeza erguida.

Maldiciones de la desobediencia

14 »Si ustedes no me obedecen ni ponen por obra todos estos mandamientos,

15 sino que desprecian mis estatutos y aborrecen mis preceptos, y dejan de poner por obra todos mis mandamientos, violando así mi pacto,

16 entonces yo mismo los castigaré con un terror repentino, con enfermedades y con fiebre que los debilitarán, les harán perder la vista y acabarán con su vida. En vano sembrarán su semilla, porque se la comerán sus enemigos.

17 Yo les negaré mi favor, y sus adversarios los derrotarán. Sus enemigos los dominarán, y ustedes huirán sin que nadie los persiga.

18 »Si después de todo esto siguen sin obedecerme, siete veces los castigaré por sus pecados.

19 Yo quebrantaré su orgullo y terquedad. Endureceré el cielo como el hierro y la tierra como el bronce,

20 por lo que en vano agotarán sus fuerzas, y ni el suelo ni los árboles del campo les darán sus frutos.

21 »Si a pesar de esto siguen oponiéndose a mí, y se niegan a obedecerme, siete veces los castigaré por sus pecados.

22 Lanzaré sobre ustedes fieras salvajes, que les arrebatarán sus hijos y destruirán su ganado. De tal manera los diezmarán, que sus caminos quedarán desiertos.

23 »Si a pesar de todo esto no aceptan mi disciplina, sino que continúan oponiéndose a mí,

24 yo también seguiré oponiéndome a ustedes. Yo mismo los heriré siete veces por sus pecados.

25 Dejaré caer sobre ustedes la espada de la venganza prescrita en el pacto. Cuando se retiren a sus ciudades, les enviaré una plaga, y caerán en poder del enemigo.

26 Cuando yo destruya sus trigales, diez mujeres hornearán para ustedes pan en un solo horno. Y lo distribuirán racionado, de tal manera que comerán pero no se saciarán.

27 »Si a pesar de esto todavía no me obedecen, sino que continúan oponiéndose a mí,

28 entonces yo también me pondré definitivamente en su contra. Siete veces los castigaré por sus pecados,

29 y tendrán que comerse la carne de sus hijos y de sus hijas.

30 Destruiré sus santuarios paganos, demoleré sus altares de incienso, y amontonaré sus cadáveres sobre las figuras sin vida de sus ídolos. Volcaré mi odio sobre ustedes;

31 convertiré en ruinas sus ciudades, y asolaré sus santuarios. No me complaceré más en el aroma de sus ofrendas, que me era grato.

32 De tal manera asolaré al país, que sus enemigos que vengan a ocuparlo quedarán atónitos.

33 Los dispersaré entre las naciones: desenvainaré la espada, y los perseguiré hasta dejar desolada su tierra, y en ruinas sus ciudades.

34 Entonces la tierra disfrutará de sus años sabáticos todo el tiempo que permanezca desolada, mientras ustedes vivan en el país de sus enemigos. Así la tierra descansará y disfrutará de sus sábados.

35 Mientras la tierra esté desolada, tendrá el descanso que no tuvo durante los años sabáticos en que ustedes la habitaron.

36 »En cuanto a los que sobrevivan, tan profundo será el temor que les infundiré en tierra de sus enemigos, que hasta el susurro de una hoja movida por el viento los pondrá en fuga. Correrán como quien huye de la espada, y caerán sin que nadie los persiga.

37 Como si huyeran de la espada, tropezarán unos con otros sin que nadie los persiga, y no podrán hacerles frente a sus enemigos.

38 Perecerán en medio de las naciones; el país de sus enemigos los devorará.

39 Aquellos de ustedes que sobrevivan serán abatidos en país enemigo, porque a sus pecados se añadirá el de sus padres.

40 »Pero si confiesan su maldad y la maldad de sus padres, y su traición y constante rebeldía contra mí,

41 las cuales me han obligado a enviarlos al país de sus enemigos, y si su obstinado corazón se humilla y reconoce su pecado,

42 entonces me acordaré de mi pacto con Jacob, Isaac y Abraham, y también me acordaré de la tierra.

43 Al abandonar ellos la tierra, esta disfrutará de sus sábados mientras permanezca deshabitada. Pero tendrán que reconocer sus pecados, por cuanto rechazaron mis preceptos y aborrecieron mis estatutos.

44 »A pesar de todo, y aunque estén en la tierra de sus enemigos, no los rechazaré ni los aborreceré hasta el punto de exterminarlos, ni romperé tampoco mi pacto con ellos. Yo soy el SEÑOR su Dios.

45 Antes bien, recordaré en su favor el pacto que hice con sus antepasados, a quienes, a la vista de las naciones, saqué de Egipto para ser su Dios. Yo soy el SEÑOR».

46 Estos son los estatutos, preceptos y leyes que, por medio de Moisés, estableció el SEÑOR en el monte Sinaí entre él y los israelitas.

Levítico 26 Commentary

Chapter 26

Promises upon keeping the precepts. (1-13) Threatenings against disobedience. (14-39) God promises to remember those that repent. (40-46)

Verses 1-13 This chapter contains a general enforcement of all the laws given by Moses; by promises of reward in case of obedience, on the one hand; and threatenings of punishment for disobedience, on the other. While Israel maintained a national regard to God's worship, sabbaths, and sanctuary, and did not turn aside to idolatry, the Lord engaged to continue to them temporal mercies and religious advantages. These great and precious promises, though they relate chiefly to the life which now is, were typical of the spiritual blessings made sure by the covenant of grace to all believers, through Christ. 1. Plenty and abundance of the fruits of the earth. Every good and perfect gift must be expected from above, from the Father of lights. 2. Peace under the Divine protection. Those dwell in safety, that dwell in God. 3. Victory and success in their wars. It is all one with the Lord to save by many or by few. 4. The increase of their people. The gospel church shall be fruitful. 5. The favour of God, which is the fountain of all Good. 6. Tokens of his presence in and by his ordinances. The way to have God's ordinances fixed among us, is to cleave closely to them. 7. The grace of the covenant. All covenant blessings are summed up in the covenant relation, I will be your God, and ye shall be my people; and they are all grounded upon their redemption. Having purchased them, God would own them, and never cast them off till they cast him off.

Verses 14-39 After God has set the blessing before them which would make them a happy people if they would be obedient, he here sets the curse before them, the evils which would make them miserable, if they were disobedient. Two things would bring ruin. 1. A contempt of God's commandments. They that reject the precept, will come at last to renounce the covenant. 2. A contempt of his corrections. If they will not learn obedience by the things they suffer, God himself would be against them; and this is the root and cause of all their misery. And also, The whole creation would be at war with them. All God's sore judgments would be sent against them. The threatenings here are very particular, they were prophecies, and He that foresaw all their rebellions, knew they would prove so. TEMPORAL judgments are threatened. Those who will not be parted from their sins by the commands of God, shall be parted from them by judgments. Those wedded to their lusts, will have enough of them. SPIRITUAL judgments are threatened, which should seize the mind. They should find no acceptance with God. A guilty conscience would be their continual terror. It is righteous with God to leave those to despair of pardon, who presume to sin; and it is owing to free grace, if we are not left to pine away in the iniquity we were born in, and have lived in.

Verses 40-46 Among the Israelites, persons were not always prosperous or afflicted according to their obedience or disobedience. But national prosperity was the effect of national obedience, and national judgments were brought on by national wickedness. Israel was under a peculiar covenant. National wickedness will end in the ruin of any people, especially where the word of God and the light of the gospel are enjoyed. Sooner or later, sin will be the ruin, as well as the reproach, of every people. Oh that, being humbled for our sins, we might avert the rising storm before it bursts upon us! God grant that we may, in this our day, consider the things which belong to our eternal peace.

INTRODUCTION TO LEVITICUS 26

In this chapter, after a repetition of some laws against idolatry, and concerning keeping sabbaths, and reverencing the sanctuary of God, Le 26:1,2; in order to encourage the Israelites to keep the various statutes and commandments in this book, and in the preceding, many promises are made of plenty, and peace, and safety from enemies, and of the presence of God with them, Le 26:3-13; and on the contrary, to such as should despise and break his commandments, the most grievous things are threatened, as diseases of body, destruction by their enemies, barrenness and unfruitfulness of land, the sore judgments of wild beasts, famine, sword, and pestilence, Le 26:14-39; and yet after all, when they should confess their sins, and were humbled for them, the Lord promises to remember the covenant he made with their ancestors, and would deal kindly with them, and not cast them away, and utterly destroy them, Le 26:40-46.
