The Visitation of Mary to Elizabeth: Bible Story and Meaning

After the angel Gabriel announced that she would give birth to Jesus, Mary traveled quickly to the hill country of Judea to visit her relative Elizabeth. When Mary entered the home of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth, an extraordinary event took place. Elizabeth's unborn son, John the Baptist, leaped for joy in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She proclaimed, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!" She also recognized Mary as "the mother of my Lord," becoming one of the first people to publicly acknowledge the identity of the unborn Messiah (Luke 1:39-45).

When Mary greeted Elizabeth, John leaped in her womb, demonstrating his recognition of Christ's presence even before birth (Luke 1:41).

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth blessed Mary for believing God's promise would be fulfilled. Her declaration echoes the angel Gabriel's greeting (Luke 1:28) and affirms Mary's unique role in God's redemptive plan. By calling Mary "the mother of my Lord," Elizabeth testifies that the child in Mary's womb is both fully human and fully divine the long-awaited Messiah and Son of God.

John the Baptist Recognizes Jesus Before Birth

John's leap in Elizabeth's womb is more than a joyful reaction; it is a prophetic sign. Even before he was born, John testified to the presence of Jesus, foreshadowing the ministry he would later fulfill by calling people to repentance and pointing them to the Lamb of God.

This moment also reflects God's calling on John's life from the very beginning. His recognition of Christ in the womb recalls God's words to the prophet Jeremiah: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you" (Jeremiah 1:5). It is very good for those who have the work of grace begun in their souls, to communicate one to another. On Mary's arrival, Elisabeth was conscious of the approach of her who was to be the mother of the great Redeemer. At the same time she was filled with the Holy Ghost, and under his influence declared that Mary and her expected child were most blessed and happy, as peculiarly honored of and dear to the Most High God. Mary, animated by Elisabeth's address, and being also under the influence of the Holy Ghost, broke out into joy, admiration, and gratitude. Those who see their need of Christ, and are desirous of righteousness and life in him, he fills with good things, with the best things; and they are abundantly satisfied with the blessings he gives.
