Deuteronomio 2

1 Después nos volvimos y partimos hacia el desierto por el camino del mar Rojo, como el SEÑOR me había mandado, y por muchos días dimos vuelta al monte Seir.

2 Y el SEÑOR me habló, diciendo:

3 "Bastantes vueltas habéis dado ya alrededor de este monte. Volveos ahora hacia el norte,

4 y da orden al pueblo, diciendo: 'Vais a pasar por el territorio de vuestros hermanos, los hijos de Esaú que habitan en Seir, y os tendrán miedo. Así que tened mucho cuidado;

5 no los provoquéis, porque nada de su tierra os daré, ni siquiera la huella de un pie, porque a Esaú he dado el monte Seir por posesión.

6 'Les compraréis con dinero los alimentos para comer, y también con dinero compraréis de ellos agua para beber.

7 'Pues el SEÑOR tu Dios te ha bendecido en todo lo que has hecho; El ha conocido tu peregrinar a través de este inmenso desierto. Por cuarenta años el SEÑOR tu Dios ha estado contigo; nada te ha faltado.'"

8 Pasamos, pues, de largo a nuestros hermanos, los hijos de Esaú que habitan en Seir, lejos del camino de Arabá, lejos de Elat y de Ezión-geber. Y nos volvimos, y pasamos por el camino del desierto de Moab.

9 Entonces el SEÑOR me dijo: "No molestes a Moab, ni los provoques a la guerra, porque no te daré nada de su tierra por posesión, pues he dado Ar a los hijos de Lot por posesión.

10 (Antes habitaron allí los emitas, un pueblo tan grande, numeroso y alto como los anaceos.

11 Como los anaceos, ellos también son considerados gigantes, pero los moabitas los llaman emitas.

12 Los horeos habitaron antes en Seir, pero los hijos de Esaú los desalojaron y los destruyeron delante de ellos, y se establecieron en su lugar, tal como Israel hizo con la tierra que el SEÑOR les dio en posesión.)

13 "Levantaos ahora, y cruzad el torrente de Zered." Y cruzamos el torrente de Zered.

14 Y el tiempo que nos llevó para venir de Cades-barnea, hasta que cruzamos el torrente de Zered, fue de treinta y ocho años; hasta que pereció toda la generación de los hombres de guerra de en medio del campamento, como el SEÑOR les había jurado.

15 Además, la mano del SEÑOR fue contra ellos, para destruirlos de en medio del campamento, hasta que todos perecieron.

16 Y aconteció que cuando todos los hombres de guerra habían ya perecido de entre el pueblo,

17 el SEÑOR me habló, diciendo:

18 "Tú cruzarás hoy por Ar la frontera de Moab.

19 "Y cuando llegues frente a los hijos de Amón, no los molestes ni los provoques, porque no te daré nada de la tierra de los hijos de Amón en posesión, pues se la he dado a los hijos de Lot por heredad."

20 (Es también conocida como la tierra de los gigantes, porque antiguamente habitaban en ella gigantes, a los que los amonitas llaman zomzomeos,

21 pueblo grande, numeroso y alto como los anaceos, pero que el SEÑOR destruyó delante de ellos. Y los amonitas los desalojaron y se establecieron en su lugar,

22 tal como Dios hizo con los hijos de Esaú, que habitan en Seir, cuando destruyó a los horeos delante de ellos; y ellos los desalojaron, y se establecieron en su lugar hasta hoy.

23 Y a los aveos que habitaban en aldeas hasta Gaza, los caftoreos , que salieron de Caftor , los destruyeron y se establecieron en su lugar.)

24 "Levantaos; partid y pasad por el valle del Arnón. Mira, he entregado en tu mano a Sehón amorreo, rey de Hesbón, y a su tierra; comienza a tomar posesión y entra en batalla con él.

25 "Hoy comenzaré a infundir el espanto y temor tuyo entre los pueblos debajo del cielo, quienes, al oír tu fama, temblarán y se angustiarán a causa de ti."

26 Entonces envié mensajeros desde el desierto de Cademot a Sehón, rey de Hesbón, con palabras de paz, diciendo:

27 "Déjame pasar por tu tierra; iré solamente por el camino, sin apartarme ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.

28 "Me venderás comestibles por dinero para que yo pueda comer, y me darás agua por dinero para que pueda beber; déjame tan sólo pasar a pie,

29 tal como hicieron conmigo los hijos de Esaú que habitan en Seir, y los moabitas que habitan en Ar, hasta que cruce el Jordán a la tierra que el SEÑOR nuestro Dios nos da."

30 Pero Sehón, rey de Hesbón, no quiso dejarnos pasar por su tierra porque el SEÑOR tu Dios endureció su espíritu e hizo obstinado su corazón, a fin de entregarlo en tus manos, como lo está hoy.

31 Y el SEÑOR me dijo: "Mira, he comenzado a entregar a Sehón y su tierra en tus manos. Comienza a ocuparla para que poseas la tierra."

32 Entonces Sehón salió con todo su pueblo a encontrarnos en batalla en Jahaza.

33 Y el SEÑOR nuestro Dios lo entregó a nosotros; y lo derrotamos a él, a sus hijos y a todo su pueblo.

34 En aquel tiempo tomamos todas sus ciudades, y exterminamos a hombres, mujeres y niños de cada ciudad. No dejamos ningún sobreviviente.

35 Tomamos solamente como nuestro botín los animales y los despojos de las ciudades que habíamos capturado.

36 Desde Aroer, que está a la orilla del valle del Arnón, y desde la ciudad que está en el valle, aun hasta Galaad, no hubo ciudad inaccesible para nosotros; el SEÑOR nuestro Dios nos las entregó todas.

37 Solamente no te acercaste a la tierra de los hijos de Amón, a todo lo largo del arroyo Jaboc, ni a las ciudades del monte, todo lo que el SEÑOR nuestro Dios había prohibido.

Deuteronomio 2 Commentary

Chapter 2

The Edomites to be spared. (1-7) The Moabites and Ammonites to be spared. (8-23) The Amorites to be destroyed. (24-37)

Verses 1-7 Only a short account of the long stay of Israel in the wilderness is given. God not only chastised them for their murmuring and unbelief, but prepared them for Canaan; by humbling them for sin, teaching them to mortify their lusts, to follow God, and to comfort themselves in him. Though Israel may be long kept waiting for deliverance and enlargement, it will come at last. Before God brought Israel to destroy their enemies in Canaan, he taught them to forgive their enemies in Edom. They must not, under pretence of God's covenant and conduct, think to seize all they could lay hands on. Dominion is not founded in grace. God's Israel shall be well placed, but must not expect to be placed alone in the midst of the earth. Religion must never be made a cloak for injustice. Scorn to be beholden to Edomites, when thou hast an all-sufficient God to depend upon. Use what thou hast, use it cheerfully. Thou hast experienced the care of the Divine providence, never use any crooked methods for thy supply. All this is equally to be applied to the experience of the believer.

Verses 8-23 We have the origin of the Moabites, Edomites, and Ammonites. Moses also gives an instance older than any of these; the Caphtorims drove the Avims out of their country. These revolutions show what uncertain things wordly possessions are. It was so of old, and ever will be so. Families decline, and from them estates are transferred to families that increase; so little continuance is there in these things. This is recorded to encourage the children of Israel. If the providence of God has done this for Moabites and Ammonites, much more would his promise do it for Israel, his peculiar people. Cautions are given not to meddle with Moabites and Ammonites. Even wicked men must not be wronged. God gives and preserves outward blessings to wicked men; these are not the best things, he has better in store for his own children.

Verses 24-37 God tried his people, by forbidding them to meddle with the rich countries of Moab and Ammon. He gives them possession of the country of the Amorites. If we keep from what God forbids, we shall not lose by our obedience. The earth is the Lord's and the fulness thereof; and he gives it to whom he pleases; but when there is no express direction, none can plead his grant for such proceedings. Though God assured the Israelites that the land should be their own, yet they must contend with the enemy. What God gives we must endeavour to get. What a new world did Israel now come into! Much more joyful will the change be, which holy souls will experience, when they remove out of the wilderness of this world to the better country, that is, the heavenly, to the city that has foundations. Let us, by reflecting upon God's dealings with his people Israel, be led to meditate upon our years spent in vanity, through our transgressions. But happy are those whom Jesus has delivered from the wrath to come. To whom he hath given the earnest of his Spirit in their hearts. Their inheritance cannot be affected by revolutions of kingdoms, or changes in earthly possessions.

In this chapter Moses goes on with his account of the affairs of the people of Israel, and what befell them, how they turned into the wilderness again; but passes over in silence their travels there, till they came to Mount Self, where having been some time they were bid to depart, De 2:1-3, and were directed not to meddle with the Edomites, or take anything from them, but pay them for what they should have of them, since they lacked not, De 2:4-8, nor to distress the Moabites, of whose country, as formerly inhabited, and also of Edom, some account is given, De 2:9-12, when they were bid to go over the brook Zered, to which from their coming from Kadeshbarnea was the space of thirty eight years, in which time the former generation was consumed, De 2:13-16 and now passing along the borders of Moab, they were ordered not to meddle with nor distress the children of Ammon, of whose land also, and the former inhabitants of it, an account is given, De 2:17-23, then passing over the river Arnon, they are bid to fight with Sihon king of the Amorites, and possess his land, De 2:24,25 to whom they sent messengers, desiring leave to pass through his land, and to furnish them with provisions for their money, as the Edomites and Moabites had done, De 2:26-29 but he refusing, this gave them an opportunity to attack him, in which they succeeded, slew him and his people, and took possession of his country, De 2:30-37.
