Yēlìmǐshū 18

1 Yēhéhuá de huà líndào Yēlìmǐ shuō ,
2 Nǐ qǐlai , xià dào yáo jiàng de jiā lǐ qù , wǒ zaì nàli yào shǐ nǐ tīng wǒde huà .
3 Wǒ jiù xià dào yáo jiàng de jiā lǐ qù , zhēng yù tā zhuǎn lún zuò qìmǐn .
4 Yáo jiàng yòng ní zuò de qìmǐn , zaì tā shǒu zhōng zuò huaì le , tā yòu yòng zhè ní Lìng zuò biéde qìmǐn . yáo jiàng kàn zĕnyàng hǎo , jiù zĕnyàng zuò .
5 Yēhéhuá de huà jiù líndào wǒ shuō ,
6 Yēhéhuá shuō , Yǐsèliè jiā a , wǒ dāi nǐmen , qǐbù néng zhào zhè yáo jiàng lòng ní ma . Yǐsèliè jiā a , ní zaì yáo jiàng de shǒu zhōng zĕnyàng , nǐmen zaì wǒde shǒu zhōng yĕ zĕnyàng .
7 Wǒ hé shí lún dào yī bāng huò yī guó shuō , yào bá chū , chāihuǐ , huǐhuaì .
8 Wǒ suǒ shuō de nà yī bāng , ruò shì zhuǎn yì líkāi tāmende è , wǒ jiù bì hòuhuǐ , bù jiāng wǒ xiǎng yào shīxíng de zāihuò jiàng yǔ tāmen .
9 Wǒ hé shí lún dào yī bāng huò yī guó shuō , yào jiànlì , zāi zhí .
10 Tāmen ruò xíng wǒ yǎn zhōng kàn wéi è de shì , bú tīng cóng wǒde huà , wǒ jiù bì hòuhuǐ , bú jiāng wǒ suǒ shuō de fúqi cìgĕi tāmen .
11 Xiànzaì nǐ yào duì Yóudà rén hé Yēlùsǎlĕng de jūmín shuō , Yēhéhuá rúcǐ shuō , wǒ zào chū zāihuò gōngjī nǐmen , déng yì xíngfá nǐmen . nǐmen gèrén dāng huí tóu líkāi suǒ xíng de è dào , gǎi zhēng nǐmen de xíngdòng zuòwéi .
12 Tāmen què shuō , zhè shì wǎngrán . wǒmen yào zhào zìjǐ de jì móu qù xíng . gèrén suí zìjǐ wán gĕng de è xīn zuò shì .
13 Suǒyǐ , Yēhéhuá rúcǐ shuō , nǐmen qiĕ wǎng gè guó fǎngwèn , yǒu shuí tīngjian zhèyàng de shì . Yǐsèliè mín ( yuánwén zuò chǔnǚ ) xíng le yī jiàn jí kĕ zēngwù de shì .
14 Lì bā nèn de xuĕ cóng tiānyĕ de pánshí shang qǐnéng duàn jué ne . cóng yuǎn chù liú xià de liáng shuǐ qǐnéng gān hé ne .
15 Wǒde bǎixìng jìng wàngjì wǒ , xiàng jiǎ shén shāoxiāng , shǐ tāmen zaì suǒ xíng de lù shang , zaì gǔ dào shang bàn diē , shǐ tāmen xíng méiyǒu xiū zhú de xié lù ,
16 Yǐzhì tāmende dì líng rén jīnghaì , chángcháng chīxiào . fán jīngguò zhè dì de bì jīnghaì yáo tóu .
17 Wǒ bì zaì chóudí miànqián fēnsàn tāmen , hǎoxiàng yòng dōng fēng chuī sǎn yíyàng . zāo nán de rìzi , wǒ bì yǐ bēi xiàng tāmen , bú yǐ miàn xiàng tāmen .
18 Tāmen jiù shuō , lái ba . wǒmen kĕyǐ shèjì móu haì Yēlìmǐ . yīnwei wǒmen yǒu jìsī jiǎng lǜfǎ , zhìhuì rén shè móu lüè , xiānzhī shuō yùyán , dōu bùnéng duàn jué . lái ba . wǒmen kĕyǐ yòng shétou jī dá tā , búyào lǐ huì tāde yīqiè huà .
19 Yēhéhuá a , qiú nǐ lǐ huì wǒ , qiĕ tīng nàxiē yǔ wǒ zhēngjing zhī rén de huà .
20 Qǐ kĕyǐ è bào shàn ne . tāmen jìng wā kēng yào haì wǒde xìngméng . qiú nǐ jìniàn wǒ zĕnyàng zhàn zaì nǐ miànqián wèi tāmen daì qiú , yào shǐ nǐde fèn nù xiàng tāmen zhuǎn xiāo .
21 Gùcǐ , yuàn nǐ jiāng tāmende érnǚ jiāo yǔ jīhuāng hé dāo jiàn . yuàn tāmende qī wú zǐ , qiĕ zuò guǎfu . yòu yuàn tāmende nánrén beì sǐwáng suǒ miè , tāmende shàonián rén zaì zhèn shang beì dāo jī shā .
22 Nǐ shǐ dí jūn hūrán líndào tāmende shíhou , yuàn rén tīngjian āi shēng cóng tāmende wū neì fāchū . yīn tāmen wā kēng yào zhuōná wǒ , àn shè wǎngluó yào bàn wǒde jiǎo .
23 Yēhéhuá a , tāmen yào shā wǒde nà yīqiè jì móu , nǐ dōu zhīdào . búyào shèmiǎn tāmende zuìniè , yĕ búyào cóng nǐ miànqián túmǒ tāmende zuìè , yào jiào tāmen zaì nǐ miànqián diēdǎo . yuàn nǐ fānù de shíhou fá bàn tāmen .

Yēlìmǐshū 18 Commentary

Chapter 18

God's power over his creatures is represented by the potter. (1-10) The Jews exhorted to repentance, and judgments foretold. (11-17) The prophet appeals to God. (18-23)

Verses 1-10 While Jeremiah looks upon the potter's work, God darts into his mind two great truths. God has authority, and power, to form and fashion kingdoms and nations as he pleases. He may dispose of us as he thinks fit; and it would be as absurd for us to dispute this, as for the clay to quarrel with the potter. But he always goes by fixed rules of justice and goodness. When God is coming against us in judgments, we may be sure it is for our sins; but sincere conversion from the evil of sin will prevent the evil of punishment, as to persons, and to families, and nations.

Verses 11-17 Sinners call it liberty to live at large; whereas for a man to be a slave to his lusts, is the very worst slavery. They forsook God for idols. When men are parched with heat, and meet with cooling, refreshing streams, they use them. In these things men will not leave a certainty for an uncertainty; but Israel left the ancient paths appointed by the Divine law. They walked not in the highway, in which they might travel safely, but in a way in which they must stumble: such was the way of idolatry, and such is the way of iniquity. This made their land desolate, and themselves miserable. Calamities may be borne, if God smile upon us when under them; but if he is displeased, and refuses his help, we are undone. Multitudes forget the Lord and his Christ, and wander from the ancient paths, to walk in ways of their own devising. But what will they do in the day of judgment!

Verses 18-23 When the prophet called to repentance, instead of obeying the call, the people devised devices against him. Thus do sinners deal with the great Intercessor, crucifying him afresh, and speaking against him on earth, while his blood is speaking for them in heaven. But the prophet had done his duty to them; and the same will be our rejoicing in a day of evil.

Chapter Summary

INTRODUCTION TO JEREMIAH 18

This chapter expresses the sovereign power of God ever his creatures, and his usual methods of dealing with them; it threatens destruction to the Jews for their idolatry; and is closed with the prophet's complaint of his persecutors, and with imprecations upon them. The sovereign power of God is expressed under the simile of a potter working in his shop, and making and marring vessels at pleasure, Jer 18:1-4; the application of which to God, and the house of Israel, is in Jer 18:5,6; and is illustrated by his usual dealings with kingdoms and nations; for though he is a sovereign Being, yet he acts both in a kind and equitable way; and as the potter changes his work, so he changes the dispensations of his providence, of which two instances are given; the one is, that having threatened ruin to a nation, upon their repentance and good behaviour he revokes the threatening, Jer 18:7,8; and the other is, that having made a declaration of good to a people, upon their sin and disobedience he recalls it, and punishes them for their wickedness, Jer 18:9,10; then follows a prophecy of the destruction of the Jews in particular, in which they are exhorted to repentance to prevent it; their obstinacy is observed; their folly in departing from God, and worshipping idols, is exposed; and they are threatened with utter ruin, Jer 18:11-17; the conspiracy and evil designs of the Jews against the prophet, their malice and ingratitude, are complained of by him, Jer 18:18-20; his imprecations upon them, and prayers for their destruction, are delivered out in Jer 18:21-23.
