You are to take some of its blood and put it on the four horns of the altar and on the four corners of the upper ledge and all around the rim, and so purify the altar and make atonement for it.

For seven days they are to make atonement for the altar and cleanse it; thus they will dedicate it.

You are to do the same on the seventh day of the month for anyone who sins unintentionally or through ignorance; so you are to make atonement for the temple.

He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from Godâs wrath through him!

For if, while we were Godâs enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!

Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.

who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time.

who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.

The Son is the radiance of Godâs glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of deathâthat is, the devilâ

and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abrahamâs descendants.

For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

Such a high priest truly meets our needâone who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens.

Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself.

But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here, he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation.

He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.

The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean.
14
How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritanceânow that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in Godâs presence.

Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own.

Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment,
28
so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said: âSacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me;
6
with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.
7
Then I said, âHere I amâit is written about me in the scrollâ I have come to do your will, my God.â â
8
First he said, âSacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with themââthough they were offered in accordance with the law.
9
Then he said, âHere I am, I have come to do your will.â He sets aside the first to establish the second.
10
And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11
Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
12
But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God,
13
and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool.
14
For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
17
Then he adds: âTheir sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.â
18
And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
19
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,
20
by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body,
21
and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
22
let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.
24
to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering, but the bodies are burned outside the camp.

And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.

Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors,
19
but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

âHe himself bore our sinsâ in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; âby his wounds you have been healed.â

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit.
