And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpentâs cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

This only have I found: God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes.â

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,

in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath.
4
But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.

And the LORD God commanded the man, âYou are free to eat from any tree in the garden;
17
but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.â

Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, âDid God really say, âYou must not eat from any tree in the gardenâ?â
2
The woman said to the serpent, âWe may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,
3
but God did say, âYou must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.â â
4
âYou will not certainly die,â the serpent said to the woman.
5
âFor God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.â
6
When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
7
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
8
Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.
9
But the LORD God called to the man, âWhere are you?â
10
He answered, âI heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.â
11
And he said, âWho told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?â
12
The man said, âThe woman you put here with meâshe gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.â
13
Then the LORD God said to the woman, âWhat is this you have done?â The woman said, âThe serpent deceived me, and I ate.â
14
So the LORD God said to the serpent, âBecause you have done this, âCursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
15
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.â
16
To the woman he said, âI will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.â
17
To Adam he said, âBecause you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, âYou must not eat from it,â âCursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.
18
It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
19
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.â
20
Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.
21
The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.
22
And the LORD God said, âThe man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.â
23
So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken.
24
After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

The LORD smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: âNever again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done.

Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of deathâthat is, the devilâ
15
and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your fatherâs desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

The great dragon was hurled downâthat ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.

Then I saw âa new heaven and a new earth,â for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.

I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, âLook! Godâs dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.

âHe will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more deathâ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.â

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb
2
down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.

No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.
4
They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.
5
There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever.

What shall we conclude then? Do we have any advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin.

As it is written: âThere is no one righteous, not even one;
11
there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God.
12
All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.â

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinnedâ

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did Godâs grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!
16
Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one manâs sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification.
17
For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive Godâs abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!
18
Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people.
19
For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
20
For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope
21
that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.

We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.
