What does the Bible say about agape? Agape is one of several Greek words for love in the New Testament, and it’s the one most often used for God’s love: self-giving, steady, and not dependent on how deserving the person receiving it is. Paul uses it when he writes that God showed His love for us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8). John uses it when he says that God is love (1 John 4:8).
The verses below show agape at work in Scripture. Some describe the love God has for us, like John 3:16 and 1 John 4:10. Others describe the love Jesus calls His followers to show one another, like John 13:34-35 and John 15:13. You’ll also find agape listed as the first fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22, and in the conversation in John 21, where Jesus asks Peter, “Do you love me?”
