âAnd I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.

On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south.

Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD Almighty, and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.

and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years.

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem

and asked, âWhere is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.â

When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.

Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them,

âWe are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death

and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!â

As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples,

saying to them, âGo to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me.

If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.â

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:

âSay to Daughter Zion, âSee, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.â â

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them.

They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, âHosanna to the Son of David!â âBlessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!ââHosanna in the highest heaven!â

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, âWho is this?â

âJerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings.

âDo you see all these things?â he asked. âTruly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.â

They came out of the tombs after Jesusâ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.

They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve aside and told them what was going to happen to him.

who will mock him and spit on him, flog him and kill him. Three days later he will rise.â

They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway. As they untied it,

some people standing there asked, âWhat are you doing, untying that colt?â

They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go.

When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it.

Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields.

Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, âHosanna! â âBlessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!â

âBlessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!â âHosanna in the highest heaven!â

Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.

As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, âLook, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!â

âDo you see all these great buildings?â replied Jesus. âNot one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.â

When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord

Every year Jesusâ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.

When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom.

After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it.

Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends.

When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him.

After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.

When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother said to him, âSon, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.â

âWhy were you searching for me?â he asked. âDidnât you know I had to be in my Fatherâs house?â

As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.

In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next dayâfor surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem!

âJerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.

As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it

and said, âIf you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peaceâbut now it is hidden from your eyes.

The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.

They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of Godâs coming to you.â

âWhen you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near.

Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.
22
For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.

How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people.

They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

You are witnesses of these things.

I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.â

When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.â

âWoman,â Jesus replied, âbelieve me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.

Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.

The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem.

On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: âDo not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.â

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven.

âWhat are we going to do with these men?â they asked. âEveryone living in Jerusalem knows they have performed a notable sign, and we cannot deny it.

And Saul approved of their killing him. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

When he came to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple.
