We have obeyed everything our forefather Jehonadab son of Rekab commanded us. Neither we nor our wives nor our sons and daughters have ever drunk wine

or built houses to live in or had vineyards, fields or crops.

We have lived in tents and have fully obeyed everything our forefather Jehonadab commanded us.

But when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon invaded this land, we said, âCome, we must go to Jerusalem to escape the Babylonian and Aramean armies.â So we have remained in Jerusalem.â

Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, saying:

âThis is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, âWill you not learn a lesson and obey my words?â declares the LORD.

âJehonadab son of Rekab ordered his descendants not to drink wine and this command has been kept. To this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefatherâs command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not obeyed me.

I myself will stay at Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians who come to us, but you are to harvest the wine, summer fruit and olive oil, and put them in your storage jars, and live in the towns you have taken over.â

Jesus said to the servants, âFill the jars with waterâ; so they filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, âNow draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.âThey did so,

and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside

and said, âEveryone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.â

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
