1 Dàwèi cóng Lāmǎ de ná yuē taópǎo , lái dào Yuēnádān nàli , duì tā shuō , wǒ zuò le shénme . yǒu shénme zuìniè ne . zaì nǐ fùqin miànqián fàn le shénme zuì , tā jìng xún suǒ wǒde xìngméng ne .

2 Yuēnádān huídá shuō , duàn rán bú shì . nǐ bì bù zhì sǐ . wǒ fù zuò shì , wúlùn dà xiǎo , méiyǒu bù jiào wǒ zhīdào de . zĕnme dú yǒu zhè shì yǐnmán wǒ ne . jué bù rúcǐ .

3 Dàwèi yòu qǐshì shuō , nǐ fùqin zhún zhī wǒ zaì nǐ yǎnqián méng ēn . tā xīnli shuō , bù rú bú jiào Yuēnádān zhīdào , kǒngpà tā chóu fán . wǒ zhǐ zhe yǒngshēng de Yēhéhuá , yòu gǎn zaì nǐ miànqián qǐshì , wǒ lí sǐ bú guō yī bù .

4 Yuēnádān duì Dàwèi shuō , nǐ xīnli suǒ qiú de , wǒ bì wèi nǐ chéngjiù .

5 Dàwèi duì Yuēnádān shuō , míngrì shì chū yī , wǒ dāng yǔ wáng tóng xí , qiú nǐ róng wǒ qù cáng zaì tiānyĕ , zhídào dì sān rì wǎnshang .

6 Nǐ fùqin ruò jiàn wǒ bú zaì xí shàng , nǐ jiù shuō , Dàwèi qiē qiú wǒ xǔ tā huí bĕn chéng Bólìhéng qù , yīnwei tā quán jiā zaì nàli xiàn nián jì .

7 Nǐ fùqin ruò shuō hǎo , púrén jiù píngān le . tā ruò fānù , nǐ jiù zhīdào tā jué yì yào haì wǒ .

8 Qiú nǐ shī ēn yǔ púrén , yīn nǐ zaì Yēhéhuá miànqián céng yǔ púrén jié méng . wǒ ruò yǒu zuì , bù rú nǐ zìjǐ shā wǒ , hébìjiāng wǒ jiāo gĕi nǐ fùqin ne .

9 Yuēnádān shuō , duàn wú cǐ shì . wǒ ruò zhīdào wǒ fùqin jué yì haì nǐ , wǒ qǐbù gàosu nǐ ne .

10 Dàwèi duì Yuēnádān shuō , nǐ fùqin ruò yòng lì yán huídá nǐ , shuí lái gàosu wǒ ne .

11 Yuēnádān duì Dàwèi shuō , nǐ wǒ qiĕ wǎng tiānyĕ qù . èr rén jiù wǎng tiānyĕ qù le .

12 Yuēnádān duì Dàwèi shuō , yuàn Yēhéhuá Yǐsèliè de shén wéi zhèng . míngrì yuē zaì zhè shíhou , huò dì sān rì , wǒ tàn wǒ fùqin de yìsi , ruò xiàng nǐ yǒu hǎo yì , wǒ qǐbù dǎfa rén gàosu nǐ ma .

13 Wǒ fùqin ruò yǒu yì haì nǐ , wǒ bú gàosu nǐ shǐ nǐ píng píngān ān dì zǒu , yuàn Yēhéhuá chóngchóng dì jiàng fá yǔ wǒ . yuàn Yēhéhuá yǔ nǐ tóng zaì , rútóng cóng qián yǔ wǒ fùqin tóng zaì yíyàng .

14 Nǐ yào zhào Yēhéhuá de cíaì ēn dāi wǒ , búdàn wǒ huó zhe de shíhou miǎn wǒ sǐwáng ,

15 Jiù shì wǒ sǐ hòu , Yēhéhuá cóng dì shàng jiǎnchú nǐ chóudí de shíhou , nǐ yĕ yǒng bùkĕ xiàng wǒ jiā jué le ēnhuì .

16 Yúshì Yuēnádān yǔ Dàwèi jiā jié méng , shuō , yuàn Yēhéhuá jiè Dàwèi de chóudí zhuī tǎo bēi yuē de zuì .

17 Yuēnádān yīn aì Dàwèi rútóng aì zìjǐ de xìngméng , jiù shǐ tā zaì qǐshì .

18 Yuēnádān duì tā shuō , míngrì shì chū yī , nǐde zuòwei kōng shè , rén bì lǐ huì nǐ bú zaì nàli .

19 Nǐ dĕng sān rì , jiù yào sù sù xià qù , dào nǐ cóng qián yù shì suǒ cáng de dìfang , zaì yǐ sè pánshí nàli dĕnghòu .

20 Wǒ yào xiàng pánshí pángbiān shè sān jiàn , rútóng shè jiàn bǎ yíyàng .

21 Wǒ yào dǎfa tóngzǐ , shuō , qù bǎ jiàn zhǎo lái . wǒ ruò duì tóngzǐ shuō , jiàn zaì hòutou , bǎ jiàn ná lái , nǐ jiù kĕyǐ huí lái . wǒ zhǐ zhe yǒngshēng de Yēhéhuá qǐshì , nǐ bì píngān wú shì .

22 Wǒ ruò duì tóngzǐ shuō , jiàn zaì qiántou , nǐ jiù yào qù , yīnwei shì Yēhéhuá dǎfa nǐ qù de .

23 Zhìyú nǐ wǒ jīnrì suǒ shuō de huà , yǒu Yēhéhuá zaì nǐ wǒ zhōngjiān wèi zhèng , zhídào yǒngyuǎn .

24 Dàwèi jiù qù cáng zaì tiānyĕ . dào le chū yī rì , wáng zuòxí yào chī fàn .

25 Wáng zhào cháng zuò zaì kào qiáng de wèi shàng , Yuēnádān shì lì , Níér zuò zaì Sǎoluó pángbiān , Dàwèi de zuòwei kōng shè .

26 Ránér zhè rì Sǎoluó méiyǒu shuō shénme , tā xiǎng Dàwèi yù shì , ǒu rǎn bù jié , tā bìdéng shì bù jié .

27 Chū èr rì Dàwèi de zuòwei hái kōng shè . Sǎoluó wèn tā érzi Yuēnádān shuō , Yēxī de érzi wèihé zuòrì , jīnrì méiyǒu lái chī fàn ne .

36 Yuēnádān duì tóngzǐ shuō , nǐ paó qù , bǎ wǒ suǒ shè de jiàn zhǎo lái . tóngzǐ paó qù , Yuēnádān jiù bǎ jiàn shè zaì tóngzǐ qiántou .

Sāmǔĕrjìshàng 20 Commentary

Chapter 20

David consults Jonathan. (1-10) Jonathan's covenant with David. (11-23) Saul, missing David, seeks to kill Jonathan. (24-34) Jonathan takes leave of David. (35-42)

Verses 1-10 The trials David met with, prepared him for future advancement. Thus the Lord deals with those whom he prepares unto glory. He does not put them into immediate possession of the kingdom, but leads them to it through much tribulation, which he makes the means of fitting them for it. Let them not murmur at his gracious appointment, nor distrust his care; but let them look forward with joyful expectation to the crown which is laid up for them. Sometimes it appears to us that there is but a step between us and death; at all times it may be so, and we should prepare for the event. But though dangers appear most threatening, we cannot die till the purpose of God concerning us is accomplished; nor till we have served our generation according to his will, if we are believers. Jonathan generously offers David his services. This is true friendship. Thus Christ testifies his love to us, Ask, and it shall be done for you; and we must testify our love to him, by keeping his commandments.

Verses 11-23 Jonathan faithfully promises that he would let David know how he found his father affected towards him. It will be kindness to ourselves and to ours, to secure an interest in those whom God favours, and to make his friends ours. True friendship rests on a firm basis, and is able to silence ambition, self-love, and undue regard for others. But who can fully understand the love of Jesus, who gave himself as a sacrifice for rebellious, polluted sinners! how great then ought to be the force and effects of our love to him, to his cause, and his people!

Verses 24-34 None were more constant than David in attending holy duties; nor had he been absent, but self-preservation obliged him to withdraw. In great peril present opportunities for Divine ordinances may be waved. But it is bad for us, except in case of necessity, to omit any opportunity of statedly attending on them. Jonathan did wisely and well for himself and family, to secure an interest in David, yet for this he is blamed. It is good to take God's people for our people. It will prove to our advantage at last, however it may now be thought against our interest. Saul was outrageous. What savage beasts, and worse, does anger make men!

Verses 35-42 The separation of two such faithful friends was grievous to both, but David's case was the more deplorable, for David was leaving all his comforts, even those of God's sanctuary. Christians need not sorrow, as men without hope; but being one with Christ, they are one with each other, and will meet in his presence ere long, to part no more; to meet where all tears shall be wiped from their eyes.

David fleeing from Naioth came to Jonathan, and acquainted him with his circumstances, and entreated his favour, 1Sa 20:1-8; which Jonathan promised, and renewed the covenant with him, 1Sa 20:9-17; a scheme was formed between them, by which David might know whether Saul was reconciled to him, and he might come to court, 1Sa 20:18-23; which being tried, Jonathan found it was not safe for him to appear, 1Sa 20:24-34; of which he gave notice by the signals agreed on, 1Sa 20:35-40; and they took their leave of one another with strong expressions of affection and attachment to each other, 1Sa 20:41,42.
